Good Afternoon Everyone,

I built a hunting rifle using a Defiance Deviant action and a Carbon Six 6.5 PRC remage prefit. However I have been having an issue with the extractor when closing the bolt on a cartridge, using ADG brass the bolt close is very stiff and it appears to be taking material off the rim of the cartridge. Hornady brass is not as tough and subsequently the marks aren’t as deep.

Any idea what would cause this issue? As best I can tell it seems like the barrel recess is preventing the extractor from opening all the way but I’m not sure why this is the case and what the best fix is.

All the other rifles I’ve built were ARC actions using savage pre fits and I’ve never had this issue before so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I expect I know exactly what's causing this issue, I had the same problem in my Howa Mini. There is insufficient clearance on the outside face of the extractor, so it binds against the inside wall of the receiver when it tries to skip over the case rim. Then when you force it, the extractor cuts a gouge through the case rim as it forces past the rim, after which it extracts just fine.

I took the extractor out and gently filed the outside face of the tip to put a shallow bevel in it, just enough to open up the clearance so it could fully jump the case rim. Unrelated to your issue, but I also was having problems with it extracting, which ended up being insufficient clearance under the extractor too, so I had to file that down as well so it could get all the way up and over the case rim. Dunno why I had such headaches with it, but it's all good now.

ETA: I wouldn't expect this problem on a high-end custom barrel and action, though. Frankly, I didn't expect it on my mass-produced rifle either. I'd contact the manufacturers/smith involved and get their feedback on why you're having the issue, but it looks exactly like what I described, the extractor isn't getting enough room to work for some reason.

It has the m16 extractor with the Recessed bolt nose.
Most likely the counterbore in your barrel is too small diameter.
Take your prefit back off and measure the counterbore diameter.

Only other possibility is that your extractor was installed incorrectly and the extractor spring is out of position which would limit the travel of the extractor. That one is easy to check with the bolt out of the action and simply moving the extractor by hand and then snapping a case into the breech face until the extractor lifts and falls over the rim.
