Amusingly short-sighted. Or maybe I am. We bought 2 Priuses, two years apart. The second Pruis replaced my piece of shit WS6 Firebird which died at 140,000 miles--the a/c vacuum switch died and along with it, both air and defroster are inoperable... and there are no aftermarket or OEM replacement parts to be had anywhere at any price; at least, that's what two dealerships and a national parts chain claimed. The 'Bird was coming apart in its' last 5,000 miles--blown water pump, new timing chain, dead smog air pump, dead Oh-2 sensor, computer sporadically quit; oil pump dead, etc; all in the last 5,000 miles.
Why a Prius, especially when I could give a shit about the environment when compared to the cost?? Because one thing's right about the "dollar vs. environment" argument--it costs plenty to save it, and frankly, me and mine won't be here long enough to suffer the ramifications of a poor environment. So why'd I break down for two, count'em, two Priuses?
I didn't count the environmental benefits at all. I'm in Mississippi; down here the air's too clean for us to give a shit about the environment... I could run that WS6 with a blown smog air pump all year long without having to fix it--the O2 sensor was different, but it wasn't smog laws that made me fix it. And we're retired... we drive maybe a total of 80 miles a week, but in two different directions at the same time. Gas could go to $5 a gallon and it wouldn't hurt us in a 15mpg muscle car, as little as we drive weekly.
So, Why?? The answer is "blood". In the weekly ~80 miles we drive, I figure we sit at stop signs and lights about 25-30 minutes per trip (11-15 miles roundtrip average). When I sat at the light in that 17mpg WS6, I used to think, somebody's boy is over in the Middle East, prayin' he don't get killed for the gallon I'm burnin' here. And all his folks is all wishin' he lives to make it home--"mostly intact" is what they'd be satisfied with; I bet they're willin' to trade his eyesight for his life. Us, we got no kids. The environment??--that's for them of you whose kids gotta deal with it... we don't deliberately go out and litter with our cans, oil, etc., and burn toxics in the back yard like so many do down here, but 'environment' wasn't even a thought for us.

I traded my 1999 Corvette in on a Prius this past January. I loved the 'vette and the Prius is a poor substitute in the power and handling departments.
My commute is 124 miles round trip per day, in December 08 (last full month with the 'vette) I spent $985 on fuel; in Feb 09 (first full month with the Prius) my fuel bill was $131.82!
Not only is my car payment "free" due to gas savings but my insurance as well.
Maybe when I retire I'll get another Corvette but as long as my commute is in effect, I'll stick to the Prius.

I'm guessing that was an A4 trans and not an M6. I'm not sure on mpg ratings for C5s, but my buddy's dad has a C6 ('07 or '08) and he averaged 27mpg on a trip and that included the 160mph blast. Of course, that was one trip of all highway driving.

I had been satring it up every month or two, but somehow, had managed to neglect it over the Summer. Now I gotta do a teardown. I don't know, honestly don't know, where that Prius warrantee will be at 100,000 miles, what state the batteries will be in, and what it will cost to replace them. Maybe it'll be a downstream owner's problem, but that doesn't make me stop wondering.

I could average over 30mph in the 'vette on long all highway trips but it dropped to 9 mph on surface streets. The real killer was prem. gas at .50-58 per gallon extra.

How dare you talk bad about the TA!! Loved mine (sold it for a bike) but learned that if you dont take care of them they will eat your wallet up. What year was it cus if it was a LS1 its not going anywhere and parts are very plentiful.

I'd say her impending "F" has more to do with her inability to form a complete thought, than what her "liberal" professor thinks of the "facts". Grammar, spelling, incomplete sentences, run on sentences, this paper has it all. Made my eyes hurt trying to read it.
Tell your sister to take a creative writing class before she graduates. If one of my employees handed me a report that read like this paper...

If you get a smart car in Canada they get 75mpg, but in the US they rate 40-50....dunno why.
I just spent $200 on my 96 Nissan truck and all of last weekend changing hte timing chain, thermostat (Was stuck open), PCV valve that was buried behind the timing cover etc etc...clutch, engine and tranny mounts, U-joints - all told $3000 worth of labor, but did it all myself...
My truck jumped from 18mpg to 30mpg overnight.....thermostat's that don't open don't warm the engine so the computer tells the engine to run rich until warmed up, so my PCV valve was gummed up because of it as well as everything else.
That was my 100,000 maintenance, at 28-30mpg I'm good for an other 100k.
But a lady at work here spent hte $30,000 on a prius. Asked her what she used to spend in gas per mo nth - roughly $150.
She said she sp ends $35-40 now.
Asked her what her car payment is, $495.....I burn maybe $100 a month in gas.
For some a prius is a bad idea, but for commuting - absolutely.
I still like the smart car tho - they have body kits for them now..

The batteries on all Hybrids are HUGELY expensive!!! They have a huge amount of toxic substances. They are VERY dangerous to work with. I have to "suit up" before working on them. You would think I was getting ready to go into a burning building. The cost of disposal is "E" freakin' normous'. I get to see the cost of manufacturing and all of the costs of operation and in almost every case the "total" cost of the Hybrid is MORE than an equal vehicle that is gas only. I am talking about from the moment of production to its final resting place for recycling. If you are buying a Hybrid or all electric vehicle because you want to save money or the planet.... You are not doing either......

My wife's has 7yr/75K bumper to bumper warranty. She just got it, and I'm trying to be a supportive husband, but the thing irks me. I just told her to be sure she got great insurance because a little fender bender ain't gonna be cheap.
In the end, its what she wanted and makes her happy (after a marriage or two one may learn the value of that).

From an environmental perspective it's really a chicken and the egg type of situation. If you don't take a forward approach and start working on getting batteries out into production then nothing will ever happen.

The Nickel mines in Siberia are indeed a blight upon the tundra. However they're a concentrated one and the chemicals in those batteries can be handled and disposed of responsibly. Those batteries should be largely recylclable to some degree and I'd be surprised if there weren't already people trying to find ways to make money off of doing something with them when the new gens come out and replace the old ones.
In regards to saving money that really depends. Over the lifespan of a vehicle how much money do you save by halving your fuel costs?
I'd imagine personally more than enough to make up for the few thousand additional you would pay for a less fuel efficient vehicle like my truck.

No, no NO!! We didn't buy our Priuses to save the environment, nor were we concerned chiefly with the impact to our finances. Sure, saving money at the pump is a direct benefit to driving a hybrid--but do you really think I committed to buying the first one without researching the longevity and costs of maintaining and/or replacing the battery system?? This is a WAG that I'm pulling strictly outta my ass, but I'd theorize that 50% or more of the hybrid buyers (of ALL hybrid vehicles) didn't buy out of environmental concerns; I bet for most of them it was strictly a dollar-and-cents "commuter" expense decision.
But for us, personally, our decision was made "on the blind"--yes, we know there is no data other than (theoretical) projection regarding the cost of maintenance on our hybrids. But imagine if we made a national (or international) commitment to supporting alternately-fueled cars... do you really think the camel'd populace of our world would have such a domineering position over our economy?? There's nothing to base the Middle East's power on except oil--they have no computer technology, no electronics, aviation manufacturing, agricultural production, no textile-related industry; all they have is oil. Without oil, they're beggars at the door--they have had to hire it all done--they might actually understand enough of it now beyond 'monkey-see-monkey-do', but the infrastructure to manufacture for their own consumption and support isn't there yet. Remove the demand for oil and they're back in the 1960's waiting for technology to come to them.
Maybe <span style="font-style: italic">we</span> spent (and will spend) more than we should have on the hybrid format, but we did it because we held the narrow vision that it might save some soldier's life who's over there to claim oil for us--and we have a (dim and unrealistic) hope that others will join us, and indirectly (and unintentionally) wrest the power of the oil/fuel economics out of the Middle East.
Sure, our economic slump is really, REALLY hurting us here in the USA--and the world--but think about how many billions of dollars have been lost in the Middle East's oil-based economy during this slide. Imagine if we could make that permanent by shifting our source fuel to something other than oil. Sure, it's a pipedream--but if enough hybrids were sold, the manufacturing cost-per-unit would drop, and we--my America--as the largest consumers of automotive goods in the world, could someday again dictate worldwide economic policies.
America is what I believe in, and we spent our 'automotive' money where we believe it would do America the most good. I'm lucky enough to "afford" it. I wish everyone could.

I have a 2001 Z06 corvette that gets 24 mpg around town and 28-30 hwy. mpg. It's all in the coefficient of drag (.31) and horsepower to weight ratio I think. 3700lbs./405hp. I haven't seen the numbers on the newer ones. I drive about 80 miles round trip each day and travel occasionally. It's a very comfortable car on long trips and comes apart like an Indy car in accidents. Dollar for dollar it's the best sports car made and it's AMERICAN.

I haven't seen the numbers on the newer ones. I drive about 80 miles round trip each day and travel occasionally. It's a very comfortable car on long trips and comes apart like an Indy car in accidents. Dollar for dollar it's the best sports car made and it's AMERICAN.

on the 2009 they have the same mileage figure they just bumped the horsepower up another 100HP to 505 horsepower. The torque on them are nothing short of phenomenal and the braking would put you right through the windshield. The thing rides like it is on rails. And would be eaten alive by the new ZR1 Corvette, that thing is a beast.

Funny, I don't think the clunker rebate was adopted to bail out or stimulate foreign OEM profits. Even better for us, personally, that same gung-ho machismo attitude kept the price of the Priuses in Mississippi quite a bit lower than the national average. I had an 07 Dodge ram 2500. it had a 5.9L diesel engine and I spent about a month buying parts and rebuilding the engine. After a low budget build I was looking at sitting in a 1200hp beast. I roasted porsche, corvettes, even beat a dodge viper on a racetrack here in KY.
All of these little rice burner cars make me laugh... you have to spend thousands of dollar to get them a couple hundred horses.

I drove a '79 Camaro (305 'electronic carburetor' overdrive auto) for 12 years. I made 29MPG at 75MPH on the interstate. the last car I drove that got less than 25MPG was my '76 Chev G-20 Sportvan, 305, 4BBL, auto. We won't discuss the '70 Charger (440, 4BBL, 14MPG)
My concerns are similar to The Mech's. The hybrid is essentially the carmakers' answer to global warming. A PT Barnum solution.
As a kindnesss to the planet, it isn't. As an economical transport, the gas consumption is attractive, but the accompanying costs are simply waiting in the wings to overcome the owner once the new smell wears off.
If you ever wondered where the economic payoff was for the 'global change' freaks, this is it.
All scams are the same. Sell the image, back it up with the snake oil, make all the right benevolent noises all the way to the bank.
Makes you wonder what's in the Algore's portfolio these days. All those 'responsible investments in worthy projects'.
I'll check back, not when the new car smell wears off, but when the paint wears off. Then we'll so how economical these little beauties really were.

I use to make good money rebuilding and tuning Qaudrajet carbs' No one really knew how to make them run right so I had my plate full of those that came from other shops or people that wanted it to run right. That was one carb that truly was the best of both worlds. Had great performance and great on gas mileage when set up correctly. It was a complex carb with a lot of adjustment that could be done wrong.

My 1970 Charger R/T-S/E's Magnum 440 had been worked on the outside, Mallory Dual point, and a Holley list 3310 vacuum secondary four barrel. I bought the book and the rebuild kit, and rebuilt and retuned that carb from scratch. We're talking a lot of parts and a few interesting adjustments. Basically a spreadbore, it was a two barrel kitten until you kicked it. Then hang on.
Rated at 375HP stock, it was easily over 400 with the carb, ignition, headers and free flow exhaust.
14MPG was with the foot in it, keeping the foot out of it netted around 20-22MPG on long highway cruises, which wasn't all that terrible considering the neighborhood.
That's with premium fuel, and the ignition tuned for full advance. The damned dual points were in need of retuning about once a month, total dwell was the sum of both sets of points. Thinking back, dual points were a strategy to keep the points from floating at high RPM, the Magnum was about wound out at around 5500rpm.
They were on the car when I got it, along with a deck lid which was pretty much wallpapered over on the inside with first place stickers from Englishtown Drag strip.

not at all. Just saying that a carb set up right will get about 5% more power than an equally well set up fuel injection. However the fuel injection is much more user friendly on the street.
