I'm looking for advice/experience about detachable rings for my first bolt gun build. I have shot all my life (bought my first rifle @ age 7) but am very new to scoped shooting. I like the idea of the capability of removing the scope whether to protect it during travel or in basic cleaning and am strongly considering the purchase. However, I have to question the ability to "return to zero" when reattaching. Also, I am familiar with "you get what you pay for" and recognize that there aren't many expensive products with this feature.

Feedback?

Not sure it matters but the rifle in question is a Rem700(.308)

Re: Detachable Rings

There aren't many for a reason. With a precision rifle get a good set of rings and torque them on. If you need to take it off or swap it to another rifle then use the proper tools and do it. It's a simple process. I did it today. Takes about 3 minutes. No need to take it off to clean or travel with the right case.

If you want an excellent set of rings that aren't going to break the bank look at Seekins Precision.

Re: Detachable Rings

Rob's dead on. Remounting a scope can cause it to lose zero, especially if you're going for precision long shots. Any upper end scope and rings will be able to handle the harshest of cleanings, so I wouldn't worry.

I'm sold on the Seekins stuff.
I loosened the rings and took a NF scope off a rifle a few days ago. I put it back on yesterday and took it to the range and wasted about 5 rounds zeroing it back in. When I finished, the elevation and windage dials were both right back at zero.
I expected it to be close, but not dead-nuts zero.

I guess that's why they're called Seekins "Precision".

Re: Detachable Rings

Like Rob said.
Also, it is quicker to switch scopes if they are properly mounted in the rings, and bases to the rifles.
It's easy to switch between guns if everything is done right.
No leveling required, you did it the first time.
Leave the rings on the scope.
Proper torque of two nuts.

Switching should be easy.
Not like watching guy's sight in right before deer season!
Although it is usually entertaining;)

Re: Detachable Rings

I do this with my bolt guns that I use for coyote hunting. Most shots are around 250yds, so I hadn't noticed any issues after remounting. Using leupolds qrw mounts for them.

For my 2 AR's I am using nightforce mounts and they work fine for me, but again not shooting past 250yds.

Re: Detachable Rings

I use Leup QRW rings on my nemesis and they've held up great, but I have different calibers zerod to different scopes.I wouldn't bother with them unless you may have the need to use backup Iron sights,if your rifle has them.Stick with std rings,as there's no need to remove the scope for cleaning.
