Hello all,

Just ran to OSH (Orchard Supply & Hardware in California) to look for the Devcon plastic steel epoxy tonight, for use to bed the scope base on my Howa. I read from other Cali shooters that OSH had the Devcon plastic steel so I thought, great, I don't have to order it from Brownells and wait a week... When I got there, instead of finding this:

I found this:

I've been to Lowes and Home Depot to look for epoxy before but knew I shouldn't use those, but this is the first time I found this Devcon plastic steel blister pack in a store. Is this the same stuff as the 10110? I know one is putty and this one is epoxy, but I am wondering if this is the same as the 10110 liquid as sold on Brownells and Midway?

Please let me know if it is the same stuff, or if you have had experience working with this and know it works for bedding purposes. Also, I believe I read the package correctly in that it has 90 minutes of working time?

Thanks!

Peter

Re: Devcon plastic steel epoxy?

Looks like the liquid version. It works for bedding the action, but you need to be quick as it tends to run as oppose to the putty. Mine came out decent enough, but wont win a beauty contest compared to some of the others I have seen. I wouldnt use the liquid for any texture jobs, too thin for that. The syringe version is new, the one I got was a 2 tube set in a blister pack from Midway.

Re: Devcon plastic steel epoxy?

Unfortunately Applied Tech near me is a Distribution Center so not open to public, and it was closed for the weekend...

Napa Auto Parts was right next door surprisingly, so I dropped in to get a can of Brake Cleaner.

Decided to stop by Walmart on the way home and found they had Krylon camo! I also grabbed playdoh for future bedding needs... A day of search for bedding material turned out to be a day of finding everything I needed for my Krylon job.

Everything turned out just great so I'll post pics later.

Thanks all.

Re: Devcon plastic steel epoxy?

you can also find a formulation in the foil tubes, metal ones, like JB Weld. if it was that or JB weld, id use JB weld. and i say that with my JB weld sitting here. i will use it on the base and the bedding job for my savage as soon as i get a vise to hold it steady

Re: Devcon plastic steel epoxy?

No one carded me, but I did have to have a clerk open the spray paint cage and stand next to me when I was buying Krylon at Walmart. I think, for spray paint anyway, that it is a good idea to keep them locked up. Sure wasn't easy to find a clerk though.

I just bought a pound of the Devcon at www.markingpendepot.com and paid $32.73 and free shipping, that was the best price I could find.
Wow,,,, must be rough in Ca., in Ohio they don't lock paint up.
You do get funny looks in Oh. if you buy more then 1 package of sinus meds. Ca. gets the huffers, Oh. gets the meth labs.

Re: Devcon plastic steel epoxy?

Thanks for the recommendation Rarebreed93, I just checked out that site and ordered me the Devcon, and also a silicon mold release they have on clearance for $2/each shipped! I will have to try this mold release to make sure it works of course, but if William's synlube mold release works, then I have high hopes for this one also. At $2/can I'll give it a try...

Not to mention they are in Murrieta, CA which is very close to me, so I shouldn't have to wait too long for this...

Will post here if this new mold release works.

Re: Devcon plastic steel epoxy?

Okay, since the silicon mold release I got from the Markingpendepot wouldn't even spray for some reason, I was unable to test the effectiveness of it. Waiting on them to call me on a "solution" whether to send me a replacement can, or not believing what I told them and do nothing until I call again...

I did however get to try the Devcon syringe stuff with a different brand of clear shoe polish I have (Angelus). I use Angelus for my leather projects and I figure it couldn't be that much different than Kiwi. Anyway, the results turned out great, the epoxy popped off quickly and easily. I think I will bed my scope base today using the Angelus and Devcon syringe today.

Re: Devcon plastic steel epoxy?

Have used alot of JB Weld and Devcon 10110 over the years for repairing corroded engine timing covers at work. JB is TOO runny on vertical surfaces, Devcon stays where you put it. I always save my mixing pallet to insure the applied batch cured well. Devcon ALWAYS seems stronger and tougher than JB when compared thusly. Devcon can be smoothed to perfection while setting up with a water moistened finger. Have had GREAT success bedding actions with Devcon. I use Kiwi Neutral Shoe Polish as a release agent, it also works GREAT.

Re: Devcon plastic steel epoxy?

Well I got the shoe polish on my bedding surface and thought I cleaned it off but apparently I didn't... That Angelus is some strong stuff, even after cleaning with acetone and break cleaner it still stuck around and the Devcon didn't stick to the scope base at all... Failed first attempt, will try again when the barreled action is painted with AH II.

Re: Devcon plastic steel epoxy?

FWIW, only the 10110 1 lb. cans (and similar product #s for larger amounts) is the steel-filled putty...found this out by talking to ITW customer support.
