Difference in Bighorn Sporter and Tactical actions

I'm planning on ordering a Bighorn action this coming week. I see some of the pictures on their site, and some say "short action sporter" and some are "short action tactical" I'm not sure what all is different in each action. Only thing I see is the ejection port is more closed off on the tactical model. Is there anything else different? I've heard that you can get it cut for AW mags. If I were to have it cut for the AW mags would I be able to use an AICS mag as well?

Heavy tang and aw mag cut on tactical action. Single feed and remington tang

Aw cut works for both mags

I'm not sure if AJ is offering his action with the AW cut yet. I've just recieved mine and I'm fairly sure its not cut for one.

Just give him a call and ask to be sure....he's very easy to talk to!

So on the Tactical it would have a stiffer tang, closed top on the ejection port, and possible AW cut? And the Sporter would be Remington tang, open top ejection port, and single feed or AICS cut?

He made me one that combines what I felt were the best features of each action. It is a standard length so remington footprint stocks don't need modification but has the smaller ejection port for rigidity and the thicker tang of the tactical model. It also has the aiaw mag cutouts and internally machined ramps for both aics and aiaw mags. I' ve only tried it with the former but it feeds smoothly from them.
All in all a really nice action.

I guess there have been some changes. I just looked at the website and it appears they have a 2nd generation of their actions they are building now. All of the above information appears to be correct for the 2nd generation actions.

As far as the first gen actions go, if you are buying a used one or older stock from somebody. I believe there was a couple of other differences. The tactical had 8-40 screw holes and a longer thread tenon. Not sure on the screw holes on the sporter, but it did have a standard rem 700 length thread tenon.

I like this setup. It sounds identical to the tactical but just in the standard 700 length and not having the extra tennon length.

If you have an existing action and need the AW mod AJ will do it for 50.00. Just talked to him today.

Kinda weird that I started this thread exactly 1 year ago to the day and I posted the finished project with my Bighorn action on the same day.
