Ok, so I just acquired a Savage 12 .308 BVSS in a Choate Tactical stock in trade. Now, I own a 110, 10, and 111 Savage and I understand the 2 digit is sa, 3 digit la etc... but what I don't know, and can't really figure out is what is the differences between a 10, 12, 16 etc?

The 10,11,12,16 are all the same action. Different finish or different model line is designated by number. Model 10 is tactical with matte black finish, 11 is a sporter in blue, 12 is varmint in blue or SS. The model 10 predator should have been 12 predator the target action is is a 12, but they are large shank. The other models can be either small or large shank, depending on factory original chambering.

There are also many different variations you need to be aware of. There is the older "staggered feed" version. If you take the barreled action out of the stock and the magazine box in attached to the bottom of the action then it is the "staggered feed" version that feeds off the feed lips of the action. The guard screw spacing is about
4.25".
There is also a DBM version of this older action and the magazine release button is a recessed round button on the right side of the stock about in the middle of the magazine box area.
Or, when you take the barreled action out of the stock and the magazine box stays in the stock held by a little spring clip then this is the newer "center feed" action and the guard screw spacing is about 4.40". The DBM version or floorplate version has a full factory DBM bottom metal or a full floorplate. On the DBM the magazine release button is on the bottom at the front of the magazine box.
There is also a even newer version called the "bottom bolt release" version. The standard Savage bolt release has always been the lever on the right side of the rear receiver ring. Pull the trigger, push down on this lever and you can slide the bolt out. The newer version on the floorplate or DBM models only have the bolt stop release button as a little black plastic push button on the front of the trigger guard. Pull the trigger and push this button back to get the bolt out.
So, in addition to the various 10,11,12,16 model numbers that refer to the finish, You now have seven different versions to identify and contend with, A): old staggered feed blind magazine, B): old staggered feed DBM model, C): new center feed blind magazine, D): new center feed DBM bottom metal, E): new center feel floorplate model,
F): new center feed DBM bottom bolt release and finally G): new center feed floorplate bottom bolt release.
If you think this is starting to get a bit confusing, well you should be in the stock business when you need to know which of these seven variations the customer has, because the inletting is different for all seven, and the customer does not know or understand what the hell you are asking him about.
Kind of makes you consider getting out of the Savage aftermarket stock business.

Wow, thank you! With your info, I now understand mine is a new-ish centerfeed blind mag, normal bolt release. LMFAO, yea, I can definitely see the disconcerting dilemma trying to keep up with all the stock options.

Savage continues to make this even more confusing. They have an 11VT now and it has the same matte finish as the 10.
