It looks like I am getting the Dillon RL-450 with stuff to reload .38/.357

I currently have the Lee Classic Press. I have Redding and Forster dies to reload .223 and .308.

I have never reloaded, this is my first attempt. I do not plan on progressive reloading, single stage only.

Do I need to upgrade this 450 to a 550?

What do I need to purchase from Dillon to make this 450 the ability to reload for .223 or .308 or both? Should I setup the Lee to do one caliber and the dillon another?

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

I bought an original Dillon progressive press before they had the 550. I sent it in and they gave me the latest version they made at the time which was the Dillon 550. Many years later I called and asked about some maintenance parts and they updated me to the latest version the 500B for almost nothing. That was years ago and I would not hesitate to buy more Dillon stuff but they just keep running year after year. Dillon has the BEST customer service and support period. They are very helpful over the phone.

It's pretty hard to beat a 550B for volume loading of handgun and rifle ammo for the money. But if you spend a bit more for the modified Whidden CNC'd floating toolheads you can build a very high precision rifle ammo loading machine saving space and time in the process.

Please see the thread about using the Dillon 550B for precision 308 loading. Link to Dillon 550B thread.

Re: Dillon RL-450

Or use as is, the only major difference is that the 550 has interchangeable tool heads. That, of course, assumes loading only one caliber on it. If a lot of different calibers, then the upgrade to the 550 is the way to fly.

Re: Dillon RL-450

Thank you for the replies and suggestions.

Here are pictures of the Dillon RL-450. Im not sure what is missing, if anything. I have a receipt dated 1984 for the RL-450 and 450 RetroFit Kit conversion.

At this time, I will be more than happy to use this as a single stage press... for now. Thinking maybe use this for my .308 and the Lee Classic for my .223. I have Redding dies for the .308 and Forster dies for the .223.

Re: Dillon RL-450

I have a Dillon 450 that I got for the equivalent of like $50. Best reloading purchase I ever made. You do not need a 550 to load ammo quickly, the only thing I really recommend is the auto-eject upgrade.
