Do I really need to know much of anything?

I'm totally new to rifle, don't even own a bolt action but seem to be getting interested. I was thinking of going to one of the long range schools. What are they like? Are they worth it? I've read articles about scopes, sighting in and that stuff, I don't have a clue, even after watching the videos. MOA this and that, Mils, this and that, it's all doing a fly by... Is all of this stuff really necessary? I mean just trying to get the bullet where you want it to go should be simple especially if you really know the rifle and ammo ? I'm dumber than a box of rocks, so the instructor would have to be a saint. All of these classes seem to be out in the middle of nowhere, I would like to learn all day, then drink, nice dinner and try to find a hot prostitute at night, that ain't going to happen in bumfuck. I'm a dumbshit 60 y/o dude and would rather use an old wood stock 30-06 (or 308). Do I need a funky ass looking rifle with a can? I don't know, I really don't know...It all just gives me a headache

Yes, you really do need to take a class. Where are you located, since many times you can start by taking a local-ish class if any are offered in your area. Then you can choose to up your knowledge after that if you want to.

No, you do not need a fancy dancy rifle in a modern cartridge to shoot rifle. A .308 or .30-06 can get the job done, if…you know what your doing.

What is important is that you have a rough idea of what you want to accomplish and do with a rifle. Then you choose accordingly.

I'm 63...I'd take up Golf if I were you.

Read more. Look at some of the basics. Decide what you want to use the rifle for. Start learning mils and understand what moa is. Get mil scopes. Buy a 6.5 and a strike eagle and go to a basics of rifle marksmanship class near you. Buy some factory hornady 140 flavor ammo.

I'd say buy a foundation stock that looks "wood" colored of your choice. Buy a
American Rifle Company

Coup De Grâce Bolt Action

Get a good barrel and have LRI put it together.

Pretty ignorant post. That's like saying "Hey I'm gonna rebuild an engine. Do I need to learn anything?"

But really, do you own a gun?
Going off what you wrote, what do you even shoot? So, it's either a pistol or a semi auto browning A5?

Owning either one of them should immerse you enough, to know that you need to learn stuff about stuff.

I vote golf too.

Yes! The owner of this site puts on excellent classes all over the country. I recommend you find the nearest one to you and sign up. Also, be sure to tell him EXACTLY what you told us in your OP when you show up for class. He has everything you’re looking for: He is definitely a saint, and I’ve heard he actually already has the drinks and prostitutes AT the class provided for you.

Nothing we do, know, and use is necessary if all you want to be is an incompetent dirt shooter.

Quite frankly, I think you're better off fishing.

What is going on lol?? Seems to be an influx of 60+ year old dudes claiming to only shoot old 06s or 300wms with wood stocks joining and trolling.

Really?
This is his first post after joining 4 yrs ago?
I smell a rat.
No I'm not a rat. I was trying to infuse some of my dry sense of humor, I know the answers to most of all this. I am having a bit of trouble with ballistics but I think that's because I'm simply reading things and not actually doing it. I was surprised I had a login, I do read the forum off and on but do not remember signing up. As far as the wood stock, I was making fun of my neighbor in his 70's (and my age) who says he can shoot ragged holes with his old Rem 700 "Ought Six" off hand at any distance...not sure if that includes blowing snow or not. I do understand hill country makes some accurate wood stocks though

Okay then. So what are you wanting to do and what are you real questions?

There is nothing magic about precision shooting.

The first thing you need to learn is how to properly hold a rifle and shoot a decent group, under an inch, at 100 yards. A quality rifle, ammo, and optic will help tremendously.

After that, you should know how to use a ballistics calculator. Start at shorter distances, say 300-600 yards, and learn how gravity and wind affect the bullet.

Once you get wind figured out, you just need practice.

I'm conflicted.

AI...maybe. A little too good for AI.

15 year old...no way. There were no acronyms and all that crazy shorthand shit that I have to decipher.

Banned member? Hmmm, no. Too fun for that.

Bored Hide member using his burner account...I want to say this is it.

Avoid 308. It has the trajectory of a rainbow.
Avoid scopes. They just magnify your wobble.
Avoid any electronics. They will get you killed in the streets.
Avoid anything plastic or aluminum. It will just bend or break.
Avoid classes. They only want your money.
Avoid golf. Golf is gay.

You need a flat shooting analog system.
Think a bolt action made from wood and steel.
Remington 700, 7mag, with iron sights.

Joking.

The first post time frame & content, does not pass the smell test.
Your right, smell a bit like a troll account from one our more vocal “friends “. Although there are also a couple other new accounts that seem determined to wake every dead thread with high schoolish responses, ohh well school is out for summer.

Don't listen to these idiots. They don't know shit about shooting rifles. You already know everything you need to know if you have watched some shooting on TV, and contrary to popular opinion on the www., you don't even need a rifle or need to mess with fancy "optics" to shoot long range.

Just log on and make an introduction post on this website and they will set you straight.

Typical boomer behaviour.
Go get another reverse mortgage and blow your kids inheritance on skanks and bud lite.

What's wrong with that plan?

The kids didn't earn the money.

Let them earn/save/invest on their own.

Oh, and really? Bud Light? WTF is wrong with you people? That's just sick, sick I tell ya.
Shit, you'd be better off suggesting Hamms or Natty Ice, or Old Swillwaukee.

HEY

I'm almost 60. Shush yo dirty mouf!
I am already 60, this year. Ain't nuthin' but a thang.

Saturday morning, I was perched on my rickety old extension ladder cutting broken branches off one of my trees. It took me a while, being careful. BP meds, Meniere's, stuff like that. It's just a number. Do what you are going to do.

And yeah, for someone to have an account that is 4 years old and all of a sudden post this makes me wonder.

Most assholes like me start posting soon after joining and now, you cannot get rid of me. Or that 60 year old smell.
