Ok this is my rant. Lately the History Channel has been showing more and more reality based TV; more mind numbing TV. I came to this realization one Memorial day when my daughter was only one and I was home with her. I was looking forward to sitting around all day watching the History Channels tributes to our fallen heroes. To my shock, I found that the entire day was a Monster Quest marathon. I felt like this was a slap in the face to everyone who has ever served our nation.

I have been noting the History Channels line up of shows such as Ax Men, Ice Road Truckers, Ice Road Truckers Most Dangerous Roads, Swamp People, and Monster Quest. I'm not saying these are not entertaining shows, I am saying that they do not belong on a station calling itself The History Channel.

When The Learning Channel's line up became overloaded with mind numbing programming, they switched their name to just TLC. I believe that it is either time for the History Channel to make the same change, or get back to their roots of educational based TV programs.

Re: Does the History Channel show History anymore?

No, very little history anymore, and once the History Channel used to be "must watch tv", but not so anymore for me.

I don't think I have much to learn from illiterate alcoholics chopping down trees, white trash killing off alligators, and driving semis.

Re: Does the History Channel show History anymore?

Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way, now what's it going to take to organize a boycott of the History channel until they improve their programming?

Re: Does the History Channel show History anymore?

I remember they used to have tales of the gun, mail call, and loads of shows on past wars I can barely stand to watch it anymore.

but to who ever made that comment about swamp people piss off lol. Gotta love it in the Louisiana swamps

Re: Does the History Channel show History anymore?

I use to work on a bunch of the History channel show, like Mail Call and the Sniper series. What happened was that they picked up the guy who discovered American Chopper from TLC. When he went over to the History Channel he brought his "type" of programing over with him. I no longer watch History channel but I do watch History International. Its what History channel use to be.

Over in the UK we have the Military History Channel (same History Channel guys but only Mil-themed programmes) - don't yuou get that over your side of the water?

Never really understand why History Channel has programmes about pawn shops in Las Vegas and a couple of scavengers in a truck wandering round the US picking up old crap out of barns. The only relevance to history is that occasionally some of the bits of crap might be old!

If that is the criteria for "history" you may as well have a show dedicated to guys who make a living rooting around in dumpsters.....

Guys, its 2010. Why are you still watching television for entertainment in the first place? Thats like saying you read newspapers to stay informed. When this trend of 'reality television' started about a decade ago, I realized it was time to start enjoying 'reality' on my own.

There are plenty of websites online now that offer streaming tv shows (educational as well as mind-numbing) that you can peruse through and find something stimulating to watch. Unfortunately, we are at a point now where the factors that contributed to the decline and utter destruction of tv programming are invading the internet by leaps and bounds. Advertisements, E-commerce, and demographic marketing has spread to every corner of the internet. Companies like google, facebook, etc. sell market research data mined from your web-browsing habits without expressed consent. Youtube videos are punctuated with commercials now, and hardly any web page on the internet is exempt from the plague of pop-up windows with hidden [X] boxes and unstoppable barrages of sound and video.

OK I got that out of my system now. At least books don't have pop-up windows or commercial breaks.

Re: Does the History Channel show History anymore?

just like MTV doesn't have music, the weather channel has more bull than what's going to happen outside tomorrow, cnn and fox news has barely any news.

how about the discovery channel? what the hell do i care about loggers that compete with each other or fisherman that whine about how tough it is to fish - hello, why are you still fishing then? between that bear gryles guy and those two guys dual surviving, i don't know if i'm watching discovery,, the outdoor channel, or soldier of fortune magazine for TV.

sometimes you just want to see two animals f#@k, or a primitve tribe that has women with boobs dragging on the ground and guys with bones in their nose. - oh wait, that's the dual survivor show too.

Re: Does the History Channel show History anymore?

Can I get everyone that agrees to send the History Channel an email stating why we refuse to watch their channel anymore? Perhaps we can help them to realize how far they have strayed.

Re: Does the History Channel show History anymore?

It used to be that I'd watch Discovery for science stuff - now it's all pseudo-science ghost and UFO hunting BS. Thankfully, there's an actual Science channel now

Re: Does the History Channel show History anymore?

I was thinking the same thing the other nite while I was
watching some tramp drive a truck around a mountain surrounded
by coca fields . Im thinking what kind of history is this?

Re: Does the History Channel show History anymore?

I've also noticed that the History Channel likes to sneak in shows with subliminal green peace agendas about how humans are destroying the planet. They usually try to support their wacky theories with history; "the dinosaurs are extinct and if we don't all do something different and drive hybrids we will suffer the same fate after we trigger another ice age." Hello!!! the dinosaurs didn't drive gas guzzling SUVs either and they are still effing dead!!!

Re: Does the History Channel show History anymore?

Have you seen Animal Planet lately, it's all about how animals kill you and are something you should be afraid of. Every show on there is very dark. Sucks

Their "The Story of Us" series might as well have the "The Story of USSR." And their "WWII in HD" was classic Lib-Tard revisionist history in which there are no villains and no heroes.

+1 lol. But you guys notice that it's not just the History Channel. Discovery and TLC is mostly garbage too. I could care less if you gave birth to 24 kids, the only thing I learn is to not have more than 2 kids and you learn that in the first minute of the show.

Re: Does the History Channel show History anymore?

Although I do like some of the shows on History and Discovery, they are both far from what they used to be. My guess as to why is that there are a lot of specialty channels now like the military channel, the science channel, and nat geo channel.

Just tun into these other channels and you avoid 99% of the bad programming taking over History and Discovery.
