I have tried numerous loads on my new 5r and I think I have finally settled on a couple. I measured the throat and it is way long, like almost .120 jump to the lands from a 2.80 175 SMK. I tried numerous loads in 168 and 175 with both Varget and H4895. So far the best I have found(less than 1/2 MOA at 100 yards, sometimes one ragged cloverleaf) seems to be 42.5 grs of H4895 and the same varget with a 175 and the only decent load I have found in the 168s is 39.5 grs of H4895. I have cheated just a tad on the length and loaded them 2.810 and they still fit the magazine. According to the manuals, this load is light and should be aroun 44 or 45 grs. What velocity do you think I will see from this load, I have no chrono yet. SHould I go ahead and spend the money and have the barrel turned to shorten the throat or just go with what I have?

Re: Does this load for my 5r sound right?

I have the same setup. I also use varget, but I'm in the 43-44 grain range with the 175 SMK. I did load some with 45 grains and did not notice any increase in velocity just more inconsistant velocities. My experience with this rig is to go with the standard OAL of 2.80 and buy a chronograph. Brunos in Arizona has them about as cheap as anyone. I went with the chrony they sell. I know there are better ones out there but for the money it works well and does't break the bank. I had no trouble at all with mine. My loads chrono just over 2700 fps. On the OAL issue I tried different lenghths and I got better performance with the 2.80 lenghth. Just my opinion and experience. I hope this helps.

try these

1. 175g smk with 44g varget with a br2 at 2.900

2. 168g smk with 43g r15 with a br2 at 2.840

3. 168g smk with 42.5g benchmark with a br2 at 2.900

4. 168g smk with 44.5g 4064 with a br2 at 2.840

but I use varget with a 168g smk with 45 g at 2.840 and a 174g with one grain les the rest is the same.it works good for me.
