agree with the above...I have a DPMS LR and it has no problem getting to 800 and a 1000 for that matter but what really matters is how you shoot it.

Re: DPMS lr 308

6" groups with a rack-grade LR-308 at 800yds is UNLIKELY. Not impossible, but unlikely. Again, I am not bashing on the LR-308, but most of them I have fired have been MOA or barely sub-MOA capable to 600yds.

Getting a semi-auto (or any rifle) sub-MOA accurate at that kind of range has as much to do (or more to do) with the shooter as it does with the equipment.

Run a couple of searches here (with Google) on the LR-308 rifles, long-range accuracy with them, custom LR-308 rifles and other semi-auto platforms for more information.

Re: DPMS lr 308

I have one that I use at "long range" out to 800, That being said possibly some of the better shooting guys that I shoot with could print a 6" group with it at 800 with my handloads but I can't. After 2 years with mine I can say with relative confidance that the gun it more capable than I am. But there again I can almost hit the broad side of a barn. One of the 1st things you will want to do is replace the factory trigger, they are NOT conducive to good groups. All in all I like mine

Good luck

With box stock AR platforms there's a lot going against them in the way of accuracy. The best way I've found to determine if the barrel is a shooter is to single feed them. If they shoot good this way you know it's either a feeding or gas system issue that's degrading accuracy. Either way, it's in the upper which is where the accuracy comes from anyway.

Using this method with 175SMK's and RL15 my LR308 will shoot five shot groups in the mid .3's at 100 yards, don’t know what it'll do at 800 though. When mag feeding it opens up to around .700" or so. The stock trigger is junk.

This tells me that the barrel is good but the bullets are probably striking the feed ramps and getting beat up a little degrading accuracy. The chamber probably isn’t a match grade chamber either and the heavy bolt / carrier slamming the round home isn’t helping much.

Feed ramps can be polished and the sharp edges knocked down. Later I'll change the barrel and chamber it with a 95 Palma reamer to see if that helps. Gas systems can be changed to the adjustable style and adjusted for the ammo being used. Adjust the system so the bolt locks back during single feeding. Not enough gas flow and the bolt wont cycle to the rear. Repositioning the gas block and varying the gas port hole size does the same thing.

If your AR is of the 223 flavor change over to the piston system, I hear good things about that as well.

Above all, shooter influence is the biggest hurdle to over come. I've seen experienced (so they said) shooters slapping the trigger on AR's like it was a step child and hurrying out of recoil. Shooting an AR efficiently is another topic for discussion.
