Re: DPMS LR-308
I like iron sights and a factory trigger for that range.
But if I use a scope, I prefer a lower-powered one, like around 4x for that range (for field of view and less perceived "wobble"), and I really prefer a military 2-stage trigger, set right around 5-6 pounds, for field use (RRA's 2-stage is a good one for the AR).
Just my preferences. Everybody will have theirs. None of this really matters, as just about any center fire rifle with any sights, any trigger, and any ammo will shoot well enough to get a kill shot on a deer at 500 yards. Your DPMS certainly will no matter how it is set up. The software counts a lot more than the hardware in this game.
If you want a little software upgrade that will give you all the tools you need to shoot kill zone-sized groups out to 500 yards, come to one of our Appleseed marksmanship clinics in Oklahoma. It is definitely the best bang-for-your-buck rifle marksmanship training you will find anywhere. It costs $70 for a weekend clinic, but that covers all the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship, and you will hear some good Revolutionary War history that you never heard in school, too.
I'm sorry I don't currently have any events on the schedule, but we will be holding them regularly all through the coming year at Afton, which is very close to Broken Arrow. I am going to try to call our host range today and get one set up for January or February. If you are in Kansas a lot, they have shoots up there regularly at Eureka and Pittsburg. They have a great crew of instructors as well.
Just keep an eye on the schedule and I promise I will have a lineup of Oklahoma events posted soon:
