dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

Mine shoots great..

as I said in another post,,

If you load for it,, use Small Base dies. I got the Redding,, it works great.

My best group is .531 at 200 yards.. and sunday I shot a .931 at 200 yards,,, I can live with that. :0)

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

I just traded one that I barely had a chance to break in. Break it in right and it should be sub 1" or better. I only shot factory so 1/2" is possibe.

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

I always use a FL die set on mine. I shoot the 168 A-Max and have always seen under 1/2 moa. Best five shot group is 0.442
I have the 18" SASS barrel on mine. I love to shoot it.

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

I've got an 18.5" Criterion in .308.
It shoots well out to 900 yards with various 155's.
When it loads itself, accuracy drops with mine as the OAL increases upon chambering.
I've tried crimping but that also has hurt accuracy as most decent bullets don't have a cannelure.
The best thing I've done so far is to keep the bullet well off the lands so changes in OAL don't make big changes in peak pressure, and using heavy neck tension.
Heavy neck tension can be accomplished by resizing without the expander ball in place.
This helps to minimize the OAL changes.

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

Looking into this rifle as well. I mostly hunt feral hogs at night out in the cornfields and canyons west of San Antonio. The LR-308L is appealing for the weight. Any thoughts on the entry level (Sportical) model?
Thanks!

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

If I single feed it, it shoots equal to, or less than 1 moa all the way out to 800 yards (farthest tested on paper).
I was knocking down bowling pins at 850 yards just last week and ended up hitting about 1/3 of the time (magazine fed, light variable winds).
I've yet to shoot closer than 200 yards with it.
When it feeds itself you can count = / < 1.5 moa with properly made ammunition.
When I say 1.5 moa that means that you can count on that, not that it once shot that with a three round group or something similar.
Others would probably say it was a sub minute gun "all day long if I do my part" as it has shot a lot of sub minute groups.

Shooting it for groups is a little disappointing but the practical accuracy of the system is really quite outstanding and deserves respect.
I have the med weight 18.5" barrel that I bought from Fulton armory.
It cleans easily which is always a good sign.
If I could do it over I'd get the heavy weight profile.
Mine didn't like the flash suppressor torqued on tight either.
Index it with a peel washer and loctite it.

It's also 12.0 lbs ready to go (less ammo) with a mk4 in a Larue 1.5 mount.

Hamilton
useing the die without the expander ball unless it's a bushing die should be to tight IMHO and cause run out and gualding upon bullet seating.
Lee dies makes a factory crimp die that will make it's own crimp into the non crimp type bullet.
Anything over ..003 in neck tension is to tight IMHO.

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

Well the first pass is with expander ball.
Then I run it again without.
I believe that it actually helps concentricity of the case necks but this hasn't been measured yet.
No galling but a good neck chamfer is required.
The Lee FCD distorts the bullets and has hurt their intrinsic accuracy in my testing, and I've tested 5 different (non-cannelured) projectiles with a reasonable crimp.
So far the 0.004" neck tension I get without the expander ball has by far shown the most promise at improving accuracy in my .308 autoloader.

I know it doesn't sound good but all I care about is results.
I'd paint my bullets hot pink if it made them go where I pointed them.
Really .............I would ;-)

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

The brown truck just dropped of my upper. Now to the range for a break in and grouping test. I hope this thing will shoot tight. If it does, off to the smith for a barrel threading for the ole cyclone k.

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

Well, I learned a lesson this weekend. On my new 308upper I can't run my reloads for my bolt gun in it. I barely bump the shoulders on my brass so it will fit tight in the bolt gun's chamber. Well they won't fit in my dpms upper. Looks like I'll be keeping my brass seperate, and FULL length sizing the gas gun brass.

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

A common problem.
It usually takes me at least an hour to properly set my resizing die for my chamber.
I hand fit my re-sized brass to get the minimum shoulder bump to make 100% reliable ammunition.

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

I reloaded a few rounds this weekend for this rifle. RCBS FL dies, rem9 1/2 rifle primers, 45.7varget, 168smk, 2.801coal. I took it out about an hour ago. Took a few rounds to zero the SS 20x scope. Then went to work on a group. Five shot group at 100yrds yielded the following...off of a bipod, and rear bag from a table. I sure hope I can get this thing to tighten up. This is the same reload for my rem700 20" barrel, hoping it would do as well through a gas gun.

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

Took another go at it on my lunch time. Shot through a crony, and got an average of 2630fps. How possible is it that my gas gun groups suck because of lack of trigger time compared to bolt gun experience? Here is another 5rnd 100yrd group and a 500yrd 5shot group. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

The loads for my R700 sps didn't group as good in my 308B either, had to reduce the load by .2 then they shrunk up, you might give the 175smk a try they work real good in that 1/10 barrel.

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

Reloaded more ammo last night....5 rounds each of varget. 45grs, 45.2, 45.4, 45.5. Here are my results. Oh, I ran 5 rounds of American Eagle 168gr otm match for the last target.

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

The single biggest factor in getting good groups from a Stock DPMS is to change trigger. I chose the Rock River Arms 2 stage trigger.
Mine is still fairly new to me but I have been able to shoot some decent groups. I did load up some cheap 150 grn FMJ's, it gave me a group of about 4 inches, after doing a little tweaking I got it down to about 2"(just plinking ammo)
I ran some of the ammo that I had made up for my bolt gun, the upper right group was doing pretty good, I pulled the stray shot.
On the middle group I only shot 3 shots, before I rembembered that it was neck sized only (hence my extraction problems)
This target is nothing to brag about, It was just using ammo I had made up, I currently have 500 more SMK 175's comming so I will build a load with them.

Re: dpms lr308 18" bull range report?

44.5 gr. of Varget 2.8 COAL 175gr SMK

load currently running in mine. My friend has the same setup as you and the loads work well for him as well. I did a trigger job on both of ours otherwise no other changes. Factory triggers have a ton of over travel and are very heavy. Yes always FL size your brass for gas guns. Hottest round is not always most accurate.
