I've got a POF vs. Sig 716 thread going and now I can get a DPMS Recon .308 for $900. Is this something that can be turned into a rifle that would be competitive to a POF or Sig 716 given the $1000 to $1200 price difference? Thanks once again for the knowledge.

The short answer is hell yes. The DPMS can be just as good of a rifle. The primary difference between the DPMS's and POF/Sig is that the DPMS is DI, whereas POF/Sig are pistons. You are paying for quality with those rifles, but DPMS makes a damn accurate AR 10 variant.
In fact, you may just consider a DPMS Oracle, screw on a Krieger barrel, and drop your favorite aftermarket AR trigger in. You'd have an absolute hammer!

I'll let it be known that tomorrows my B-day and I have had a couple Bourbons tonight. I've got friends saying get this and get that, like a SA scout squad, or Socom 16, or Get a Armalite, ect. I usually get something a little different, In 7.62x39 I didn't go with an AK but instead got a CZ-VZ58, in 5.56, I went with an AR-180, ect. Now with a .308/ 7.62-51 I'm just not sure which way to go?
if that dpms recon .308 is new for $900, then hell yes..... id be all over that... that is a whole lot of .308 AR for $900 dollars... free float handguard, 16" stainless steel barrel. I almost purchased a recon before I purchased my LMT.
^What he said. For 900, yes! My partner shoots a Recon. It has been reliable and he is 1 moa and under all day at the ranges we shoot (generally under 300). His only changes have been at trigger, adjustable gas block and muzzle brake.

I agree with Elfster1234 and the others. DPMS make solid accurate rifles. I own a POF, Armalite AR 10A4, SIG 716, H&K MR762 and a DPMS SASS. The DPMS is the most accurate and one of my favorite 308's. Jump on it, you wont be sorry. Only down side it's a beast to carry around.

I'm actually a piston, op rod guy but also realize a DI AR is a solid system! I just want a rifle that will feed and extract reliably with good accuracy and figured that the DPMS would also be upgradeable. And a Happy birth day to you too, I'm celebrating the Big 50! There will be much shooting in the backyard range!
I forgot to add the only thing you might want to upgrade is the trigger. Some I have tried, not the SASS that has JP trigger, have triggers that need to be replaced.

Also, any 308 AR with a scope is going to be heavy ive found out. With scope over 12x there is not much you can do about staying under 11pounds.

Stainless heavy barrel is good
Comes with an ok magpul stock and magpul buis is good.
I would get it.... Slap a nice one pc cantilever mount with a 3-15 scope, and a harris bipod adapter with a 6-9 swivel harris bipod with notched legs and start kicking ass.
I know where you can get really nice harris bipod adapters for 9dollars shipped.send me a pm.

$900 for an AR-10 variant is a good deal, especially one with a FF stainless barrel.

I think most here would already own that rifle if we could find it for $900.00. It's a sound setup with the ability to be even better for a little more money. I pick it over a piston system even if there was a $500 difference in price.
With my "habit," I wouldn't already own one, I'd own three or four. I'd be screwing a 6CM on one and a .260 Krieger on the other. You know, just for shits and giggles, of course. You could probably squeeze 200 or so out of each of those Recon barrels...
Picked up the Recon on Saturday, gave it a quick clean and lube and put 20 rnds. Through it, feed and extracted fine with some old ball ammo. With the money saved I also picked up an as new CZ VZ-58 that I always wanted to get. Now to break in the Recon and see what it can do! Pics to follow! Thanks for the help and I'm sure I'll have need of lots more info going forward with my first Ar-10 platform rifle.
I got it at Cabelas for $1299 with a rebate for 4 mags and a cleaning kit. I never carry a credit card balance and had $ 500 Cabela's cash.
How is it working out for you? I have this rifle also, but I haven't tried any distance shooting with it. Using it more as a carbine.
What handguard is that?
Sorry, no group size pics yet, just shot the 20 rnds into an old 5 gallon LP tank in the backyard. But here are some riflr pics.

No problem, you might consider going for the other one that doesn't have full length rails. It might save a little weight and also give you something a bit smaller in diameter to hold onto. The way my rifle is setup it weighs about 10.5 pounds with no magazine, so it's a little heavy to use as a "carbine". The MOE Rifle stock is probably not helping. I think it's about a 1/4 pound heavier than the original stock and carbine buffer tube.
Haven't figured out what kind of optic setup I'm going to go with yet, so I mounted up an old Weaver fine cross hair K-4. I used some generic mounts I had laying around from a .22 I'd bought. Old meets new....ha-ha.
Sighted it in and all the way left on Adj. and it still shoots to the right..oh well, at least I know its not the rifle, it shoots fine with the open sights.
All good so far, I'd read of some others with this rifle having trouble with it but it seemed to be gas block related. No failures to feed or extract with the stock supplied magazine. My god what a trigger! That has to go. not sure what to get there either.
I'm going to start a new post on the mods and set up. It seems to be a decent shooter.
