DPMS SASS accuracy issue?

I have an SASS from DPMS and I use hand loads that are SMK 175's. I did the DPMS prefered barrel break in and got awesome dime size groups for the first 35 rounds then it opened up to 1.25 - 1.50 inches. The scope is blue locktited and isnt the issue. I was told that you need to get atleast 300-400 rds through it until it will hold tight consistant groups. Is this true? I know these are very accurate rifles and supposed to be sub MOA but I am very disappointed and confused. Any info or help?
Thanks in advance.
....also, I run a CAN and the tight groups were done with the CAN on it but the inaccuracy was with it on as well..and with the CAN off.

Clean the BCG real well, even the back of the bolt and rotate the gas washers.

It will come back, and then drop off at about 130 rnds again.

Re: DPMS SASS accuracy issue?

Its a a .308, with twice the fouling of a .223.

Plus the can is blowing back hotter than non-can shots gasses with extra fouling.

So its gets dirty faster. Now with a AR-15 you can run them about 500-600rnds before accuricy slips.

So a .308 would be half of that 250 -300rnds. My findings are right at 130 - 150rnds with a 20" and a 16"

Why is it this way without the CAN? I cleaned the bolt, carrier, and the rest of the rifle and shot it without the CAN and got the same disapointing results.

Re: DPMS SASS accuracy issue?

I checked the scope / mount and all is good. I have heard through the grapevine that it is a minimum 200 rds for the barrel to start getting broke in but really 300-400 and it will be capable of .5 MOA all day long as the barrel will be broken in at that point..(per DPMS). A helpful SH member told me this and I have heard this from others as well. Is this the case?

Re: DPMS SASS accuracy issue?

Just keep shooting it, and try different bullets. My ex-DPMS 24" 308 was VERY disappointing at first. All I ran through it was 168 FGMM and it was getting like 4" groups (and Im a pretty decent shot).

I then began to handload for it and the groups were MOA or less. So, this is either due to a change in bullets, roughly 200 rounds of FGMM down the bbl to smooth it out, or both.

Re: DPMS SASS accuracy issue?

My SASS is very picky about ammo. If I run 168 or 175 FGMM its a freakin laser. Anything else the groups open up considerably. I read somewhere that the gas system on the SASS is optimized for 168 FGMM and I can believe it.

I think the worst ammo I've tried is 175gr Fiocchi match...that crap shoots as if my barrel was bent. It might be your loads. I wouldn't bank on the notion that just because they're hand loads they'll shoot well.

What runs best in mine is:
168 & 175 FGMM
168 Lake City Match
GI M118

All of those loads net consistent sub-moa groups. The GI M118 is amazing if you can find it and the LCM is slightly better than FGMM.

What kind of 168's? They're not all created equal.

I was able to get them to shoot well (SMK's, AMAX, Nosler) but I had to push them a lot harder than I wanted to, max or over max and the brass was getting beat to hell. 175's are more forgiving and I can get them to shoot well with a wide range of powders and charge weights, from 40 grains AA2460 to 45 grains varget.
