Duelling Tree

I want a dueling tree with targets ranging from 2" to 1/4" for use at fairly close ranges, 25-50 yards like a KYL but vertical. Everything that's out there has paddles that are FAR to big both thickness and diameter?

I would prefer to keep it light weight, one or two pieces total and be constructed with the use of a welder or cutting torch. For rimfire only I think I could get away with the spine being a 2x4. What I really need a lead on is the "paddles", can I use something other than AR500, specifically something I could find at a hardware store?

AR500 will certainly last longer, but if you only intend to use 22LR LRN (no jacketed HV) ammo then you can get away with a "milder" steel for sure. Especially in a spinner or dualing tree where the target moving "absorbs" some of the energy.

In fact many cheap action targets for 22LR do not use AR500...

I have several cheaper "spinner" and action targets. Think "Birchwood Casey"...they last OK and are cheap enough to replace when they do wear out...

Not sure what you could use from a hardware store. Would need to poke around a bit...

I had a MGM 6 target Dueling tree and really like it. Now have a Action Target 6 panel and it works great too. Son and I use it for AR practice and pretty much any hot on the paddle will send it to the other side, and I don't think we ever had a bounce back. Action target one was about $50 cheaper IIRC. Just bought a 22 spinner from MGM and am really looking forward to trying it after the recent snow dries out.

I don't know how small you want or what you are shooting, but the panels on the dueling trees are just about right sized for off-hand/speed-shooting with a handgun or semi 22 rifle. If you are looking at doing bolt action drills, I could see them needing to be about 100 or even more out to put some difficulty into it.

Make sure you have some slope to the targets to ensure spall and knock backs aren't an issue. Even with the moving target panels, you can feel some bits coming back.

I have a KYL and really like but I fine the 2" to !" too easy at 50 yds. I put together a small KYL from 5/8" to 3/16". I used 1" gongs from shooingtarget7 ( they have a very well made KYL ) and turned them on edge on a piece of thread all, with Pipe between then bolted together. The only problem with KYL turned vertical, is how will you stop the target and keep it from bouncing back. these small target will spin 20 times when hit on a KYL.
For some reason I can't post pics on this board now. PM me your email and I will send pics of my small KYL.
