meh, 2.5 hours flew away. I was never board because the slower parts were masterfully shot. The book is a tomb. No way to do it justice in one movie.
Exactly, I gave up on the book many times, my ADD would never let me get into the story. (Not to mention, I can’t read or write)
Took my 2 sons. We all liked it. Followed the original movie very closely while definitively laying the basis out way more clearer than the first
like the 80s version a lot better. Thought this sucked to be honest and left out quite a bit of development and background
HBO just wasted a great opportunity for a new series. Plenty of material already written to go almost as long as Game of Thrones.
I read dune, children of dune and dune messiah when I was in high school.
By the time he got around to dune messiah, shit got weird and I lost interest in the books.
Confused. It’s Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor Of Dune then Chapterhouse Dune. If you stopped at Dune Messiah and lost interest in the books, you wouldn’t have made it to Children of Dune.
Regarding the movie, I heard they use the word Crusade instead of Jihad in order to not offend the Muslims. That bothers me because the word Jihad is used extensively throughout the entire series of books. I am a huge fan of the books so any changes will bother me as the words used are important to the story. The middle eastern influence is very heavy in the story and it’s clear that was Herberts inspiration for the Freman.
The movie is amazing...seriously epic in scale like nothing I've seen in a while. It's also incredibly faithful to the book, though sadly glosses over some important characters (Pieter, Dr Yueh, & Thufir) and plot lines (the traitor) that left me a bit frustrated. But if you're a fan of the book, it's awesome to finally see realized like this. Oh and goddamn it's awesome to finally see Duncan Idaho kicking ass.
If you're going into it knowing nothing about Dune, it may be a heavy lift and require a few re-watches to fully get what's going on.
At a minimum, it's worth it to see in IMAX for the visual/audio spectacle.

It might be ten movies if you go into all the background stories and all the nuances of the characters. The Lynch movie starts out with narration and explanation which is a huge, legitimate knock on it. If you have to stop the movie to explain things you’re doing it wrong. I think this one strikes the right balance, and who cares if you don’t know Yueh’s back story or Thufir’s (The more interesting of the two). Lynch wasted a lot of good story telling time on some of this development, and I prefer it’s glossed over to make the movie flow, which the Lynch did not do. If you want the full Herbert detail read the book. Just my opinion.
I worked in Hollywood for a good chunk of my 30s & 40s. Something you learn early on is that "you have to be willing to kill your babies" in order to serve the story. A lot of folks get really attached to the creative bits they work on for months at a time and have a hard time letting them die when they become a distraction to the story, throw off the pacing, or are no longer relevant.
Yep, I agree with you - it's good that they killed those babies for the sake of making an entertaining film that's still a very faithful adaptation. Now I just get to annoy my wife by filling her in on all of that stuff that ended up on the cutting room floor.

I never could follow the first movie. I got lost in the weeds and never caught the main story, to me as a kid (haven’t watched the first movie since I was in my teens) to me as a kid it was some esoteric imagery with sub par acting and long winded lines. It lacked continuity and always lost my interest.
this new take on the classic garnered my attention right away and made it seem like 20 minutes went by. It was glorious.
Legendary Pictures just announced that Dune: Part Two has been greenlit for production next year!
So this means we'll get to see a new version of the Battle of Arrakeen, but it'll be interesting to see if they weave in some of Dune Messiah into it?

Having read the book several times before seeing the original movie, I spent way too much time mentally digesting "differences and departures" during the screening to enjoy the film fully. I can't wait to be disappointed by this one as well.

Yes, the early SciFi mini-series was quite good because it followed the first book more than the Lynch film and then expanded on it with the other books. But man oh man, its low budget production is extra-dated looking now.

The Sci-FI series was decent. The production design was cheap. The Children of Dune sequel combines Dune Messiah and Children of Dune which is a shame. Still haven’t seen the new one. As a huge fan of the books, I just feel that it will only disappoint me. However, I am even a bigger LOTR fan and I absolutely love those movies despite some liberties taken with the source material. I have had friends see the new movie and they said it was a decent adaptation. I have HBO Max but I feel like I need to just wait until it comes out in 4K so I can watch it in my movie theater room. Living out in the country means I have bad internet and when you blow images up to 150”, there is too much degradation in the image quality that doesn’t show up in 75” screens. The positive word of mouth definitely has me more excited than before the release.
Watched it last night and really enjoyed it. I will be watching it a couple more times likely, partly because I was distracted while watching it and partly because I couldn't get the full audio experience (didn't want to wake the wife or kid).

The first Dune book was great, if they follow it then the movie will be great too. Later books in the series got worse and worse, the one where he's a sandworm and all the soldiers are lesbos or whateverthefuck was a doorstop.
Captain Picard yelling "ATOMICS!!!" was kinda funny. The rest of that 80s movie was a travesty. Sting in a thong lmao.

I've watched the Lynch cult classic many times, including the directors cut.
I'm curious to see how they'll wrap it up in part two.
I was kinda hoping for more dialogue and character development, the story is too big for that I suppose in 2.5hrs.
The ornithopters were everything they should have been in the first film.
I didn't think the ships were too cheesy.

I just hated the new one, really left a lot out that the 80s version did not. I liked how they talked to themselves and you could follow along, character development was much stronger and the sequencing was more in line. the new one looks rushed
The book has grown on me over the years. I remember reading it as a boy and thinking that an idea like prana-bindu was mysti-kewl, but later in life I learned that serious people did similar things, like Rickson Gracie studying a yoga- and animal-based movement system with Orlando Cani and Ellis Amdur writing about traditional body system trainings in Hidden In Plain Sight. It's too bad the author never wrote a 'making of' book where he parsed out all the ideas and influences that went into Dune.
just saw it. have read the book at least 5 times. it was well done and well worth seeing. i am quite doubtful that the rest of the book can be done in another 2.5hr film. several complex actions and and character actions are going to be missed,i fear. my friend never read the book but was able to follow the story pretty well. i did have to explain a few nuances that she missed. overall considering good movies from great books,i would say it would be at # 3 along with the godfather (1&2) and the ring trilogy. certainly look forward to next one and will grab the dvd as soon as it shows.
Watched it on the big screen last Friday and again with wifey at home on HBO. I really liked it. Looking forward to part 2.

I was hoping to see Villanueve's interpretation of the Guild navigators in this one. Maybe part 2? Overall it was a great movie for Dune fans. They did a great job with the Harkonnen and the Baron!

I actually like all the books up to God Emperor. Sadly Frank Herbert never finished the second part of the Dune story of Heretics and Chapterhouse. His son released a sequel with Kevin J Anderson as the writer. I never bothered with it. But you are right, God Emperor while I thought was an engrossing and enjoyable book would make a weird and most likely unwatchable movie.
There is good and bad with Lynch’s version. I like the inner dialogue because so much of the dialogue in the books is in their heads. Herbert allowed the reader to actually get inside the characters heads and it really enhances the story in ways that cannot be done without it. But not everyone appreciates that. I love the stillsuit design in Lynch’s version but it’s not book accurate because he takes away the cloaks that the Fremen use to protect themselves from the sand and sun. Not a fan of the ending at all amongst other things. But it was my first exposure to Dune, so I have a soft spot for it. Didn’t read the books until High school/college. Can’t wait to see the new one but it may be a while.
I liked the first one. i thought it was edgy for its day. I think Kenneth Braugh (sp) is a way more disgusting putrid Baron. I think the battle scens in the first were too few and not enough spent on the technology. I kinda feel the same way about the new one. while there was more than the first, I would have prefered more battle scenes vs the pretty backdrop that kinda stretched the movie out for me. the new Dune is good stuff though. definitely getting the blu ray when it comes it as a set

Definitly a step up in terms on the movie vs the 80s version (which I like, but yeah, has its moments). I thought they did some very cool things like the orinthopters, shields, the 'new' Baron Harkonnen.
Things I didn't like--only one major quibble and they made Jessica kinda of a pussy (no pun intended). She came off way more (bad ass? its not quite right) 'tough' in the book.
I missed the trap within a trap with a trap plotting. Its REALLY tough to take that from book to screen. They did a good job. Tough to follow 18 plotlines even in a book.
I had to get my wife up to speed on parts, but seeing as how she (a non-book person) and I (a book FAN) who has read all Six (and none of that anderson trash) both enjoyed it--well done.
Also I need an Atreides beard. It just said "win"
On the book side--the first 3 were solid with 1 and 3 being very very good, last 3: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!

Great movie. I didn't know all that much about Dune going in. Just something about spice mining and worms and blue eyes. I was able to piece a lot of the backstory together from the new movie. It's subtle, but a LOT of the stuff that was "left out" was actually summed up nicely if you pay attention. Something like the Baron's line, "You have a wonderful kitchen, cousin" seems pretty banal at first. But it really does sum up a thousand-year blood feud quite well. And you get the backstory instantly. That seemed to have been done a lot in this movie out of necessity. Personally... I would have gladly sat through 5 hours of that movie and enjoyed more character development and backstory. But the last movie of that length I saw was 20 years ago (Gettysburg). They just don't make longer films anymore.
Anyway... beautifully shot. Looking forward to Part 2.
