Hiders,

I have always been under the impression that the only way to remove Dura Coat was to blast your rifle and if it was on your optics, well you would just have to learn to love it. Well I came across an incredible deal on a sn-4 that was Dura coated and I decided to give removal a try. Here is what it looked like prior to the Dura Coat removal,

The secret to my success...

I stuffed the objective and ocular lens with cotton balls and went to town. The Zip Strip lifted the Dura Coat in about 2 minutes. I couldn't believe how fast and easy it was to clean the Dura Coat off of the scope. It even lifted the coating out of the knurled power adjustment ring. No pain in the ass elbow grease or going after it with a nylon brush. I was extremely careful to keep it off the lenses, and it worked like a charm. There was absolutely no damage or color change to the scope body. Now the scope looks like it just rolled off the line at USO.

NIce work.

Zip strip is great stuff. I use it to refinish rifle stocks. Takes all that crud off wood without raising the grain.

TM cleaner takes Duracoat off right away also. None of my muzzles have any paint of them anymore.

You must have had a poorly prepped job to take care of there. I personally stripped a Surgeon action of duracoat, and used everything from MEK to Aircraft stripper... if it is properly prepped it is no easy chore to remove... I am only speaking from experience, there is nothing that will take the stuff off easily if it was done right.

fortunetly they probably did not blast the scope. I have taken off fully cured duracoat with carb cleaner but it is not a real fast process.

I use jasco paint stripper when I refinish barreled actions. It blisters duracoat off blasted metal. Don't use latex gloves though, it will burn your skin through them.

:eek:Remember that any residue left over from brake cleaners, carb cleaners and paint removers can be highly toxic, especially after they are burnt off like welding a bolt handle on. These fumes can effect your nervous system and internal organs (kidneys, liver, etc.)and can even result in death just from one little whiff.

Even the disposable nitrile gloves only last a few minutes. I change my gloves quite often when removing duracoat, as soon as I feel the gloves start to loosen up, I change them.
