Gunsmithing Duracoat inside barrel

I foolishly allowed a local gunsmith to paint Duracoat onto the barrel of my very accurate custom rifle. He didn't close off the muzzle and a bunch of Duracoat was painted inside the muzzle end. Do you guys think I should shoot it out- will it work? I already tried to remove it with epoxy paint stripper with limited results. I believe that there are some stronger paint strippers out there- "aircraft strippers"- that I could try. Do you guys think I should try that, or just shoot the thing?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Duracoat inside barrel

kutzit is a decent stripper too. im torn, my first thought was shoot it out. has the accuracy declined? may not be an issue. how far in did it go? the kutzit took paint off a YHM riser i bought for my AR and didnt touch the parkerizing or whatever the finish is. have you tried brake cleaner or is duracoat immune to that? stripped may not work either

Re: Duracoat inside barrel

Aircraft stripper is the strongest paint stripper they sell, to the general public at least. You have to let it sit from what I remember. Do you have a picture of it?

Re: Duracoat inside barrel

have you tried using a bore brush? I've had that happen with dura- coat and robar's rogaurd and the brush got all of it out. I would not use aircraft paint remover. That shit is so potent that im pretty sure it would frost the bore seeing to how most of them have ammonia in them and you need to let them sit for 5 min or more.

Re: Duracoat inside barrel

thanks for the comments guys.

update - i got some of it out using acetone today and then I put about 7 rounds through it. It looks like the rifle is holding 1 moa but as far as the previous .5 moa i am not sure about that as of yet.

I plan to clean it well with normal methods and then check it for paint and clean again with brushes and acetone. after that purging the acetone with hoppes. I think it is coming out.

thanks

Re: Duracoat inside barrel

I had the same thing happen to me but I was the "gunsmith" after 10-20 rds it will be gone if you just shoot it. Brake cleaner will take it out but will also damage the other Duracoat.

Re: Duracoat inside barrel

well I just cleaned it and there are still some little bits of what I believe is duracoat. I figure I will shoot about 15 more through it and then see what accuracy looks like. Hopefully I was just worried over nothing.

thanks again.

Re: Duracoat inside barrel

For you do it yourselfers, i use a bullet for the muzzle. Travis Ridell showed me this, works like a charm. Just gently tap it in. Leaves a perfect finish around the muzzle area without getting anything (i.e. Cerakote or Duracoat) in the bore, comes out real easy, and won't damage the crown.

Re: Duracoat inside barrel

I had a action manufacturer cerakote my barreled action and they cerakoted the chamber....nice. A brillo pad actually worked really well and I cleaned it up. I suspect a standard copper brush will clean inside the barrel just fine...at least if it is a stainless barrel.

Re: Duracoat inside barrel

thanks-

I dont think I have anything to worry about.

I know I could have used a bullet or an earplug to close off the muzzle but I figured for sure that the smith would have known the same thing.

thanks again guys

Re: Duracoat inside barrel

I'd be pretty pissed about that. It's not the bore so much as the crown. Form what I've read right here on the Hide you don't want to be messin' with the crown... Either by damaging it or letting something like dura-coat make it uneven.

I sprayed my rifle with Aluma-Hyde II and found the simplest way to protect not only the bore, but the crown as well. I used one of those squishy memory-foam ear- plugs. It not only seals the bore but expands to the bevel of the crown. When you pull it out the crown has no coating on it... FWIW

ETA: Will not work on larger calibers if it falls thru the barrel.

ETA: OK... I just read the post right above mine that already mentions the ear-plug! Please go easy on me... It's early!!!
