While there may be more to the story that provoked the manager to press charges over $5 (I'm sure it isn't the first time they've seen this song and dance), it certainly doesn't look good for Safeway at all.

What I want to know is why do people eat food at the supermarket prior to paying for it? Stores aren't restaurants; take the two minutes out of your precious day to pay for your merchandise PRIOR to digestion.

Re: E-5 and wife arrested over a sandwich

Never shopped at a Safeway but I routinely crack open a bottle of water or Snapple as I'm grocery shopping or wandering around Best Buy. Once I'm done shopping, I have them scan the empty at the register. Never had a problem but I can see how someone would forget to scan the item.

Regardless Safeway is going to look like the bad guy in all this. Seems like it may have been an honest mistake.

It was probably allowed to escalate beyond common sense but hey, if you're going to open stuff up before paying for it make sure you pay for it....

Given that they had self-serve checkouts which are usually empty then it would have been even easier to just pay up front then eat and shop.

Having the kid separated though.... hmmm.... as a new dad, I'm not sure that would happen...

How much in tax payer money for $5 sandwich? So they bought a bunch of other things but stole the sandwich. Whatever. As soon as they offered to pay for it, should have been dropped.
