Who makes a good e-tool or foldable shovel for backpacking? I bought one at an army surplus a few years back and it was junk. The blade rolled up on the first use. I am not sure if it was a mil-spec or just some junk the where selling. Anyway, I am looking for something light weight for backpacking, but still be sturdy.

Re: E-tool

What do you need a fold-able shovel for when backpacking?

Concerning good fold-able shovels.... I like the old school wooden handle(WWII vintage), they are very stout.

Re: E-tool

Fire pit. Cat hole. Runoff trench for tent. Self-contained expedient toilet/turd flinging unit. Chopping firewood. Putting fire out. Etc.

I still use one that was issued to me almost 20 years ago. I've filed/sharpened the edge and re-blackened it several times. It's done very well. But you have to make sure it is an actual GI and not a ChiCom copy.

digging a latrine at the camp maybee. Or dig a hole by your fire and put in some coals and your supper wrapped up in tin foil and cover with dirt till its done. I do alot of camping and usually do the cooking and need a good shovel for shoveling with out breaking out the full size one from the garden.

Re: E-tool

I also prefer the older styly WWII e-tool with the wooden handle.

I've had the unfortubate experience of breaking several of the aluminum double folding models...not a good experience when you're two days out on a five day backpacking trip. I've carried the WWII style in my vehicle for the last few years and I've had no complaints.

I picked mine up at the local mil-surp store...about $20 as I recall.

Re: E-tool

I've got three.....a US issue folder, a Dutch Army wooden handled folder with pick/spade and a WWII German army one (complete with file-sharpened edges!). Great to keep in the car.

For back-packing the Dutch and German ones are a little on the heavy side and quite awkward to stow unless you strap them to your pack.

Looked at the Gerber but couldn't see too much difference to the issue ones?

+1 i used to use my issued e-tool all the time. about 2 years ago, i decided to try to cut weight on my field kit.

after some research, i decided on the glock e-tool. it is strong as f**k! and a fraction of the weight of traditional options. i do miss the double handles, but the lack of weight more than makes up for it. plus, the built-in saw is solid and functional.
