Ok, was at the range this weekend and I noticed I sometimes have issues with cheek weld and my ear muffs. I was looking through the glass of a neighboring shooters rifle and could not get anywhere near seeing through it due to my muffs. I just have some Remmington non-electronic 30db NRR muffs. Do you other shooters have issues? What do you recommend? Usually it's not an issue with my rifles although I tend to knock them around a bit until I get into my regular/consistent weld.

I like the Peltor electronic slim models they run less than $50.00 and I have had no problems. I have even been able to wear them with my Kevlar helmet.

I have some Pro Ears and I don't have that problem. Shot prone with them today and no issues. They don't extend much past the bottom of the ear at all. Can't say if they'd work for you though.

I use Howard Leight Shooter's Electronic Earmuff. They dont effect my cheek weld and you can find them for around $50.

I use howard leights and absolutely cannot get a proper cheek weld with them unless I slide the strong side cup up and expose the lower half of that ear. And even with the best seal, their noise attenuation is marginal.

With most of my rifles it's not a problem, but with my SPS and it's adjustable cheek piece, I gave up and just use inserts.

I use these. They're only about $10 at Home Depot or Lowe's. They don't touch the stock and when your not using them the fit easily around your neck. I take these hunting too, just wear them around my neck until its time to shoot.

I like the idea of wearing those around your neck for hunting Mule, especially with a rifle with a loud brake. I only wear my Pro ears when I'm stalking. I never have ear protection in the tree or box stand. Need to pick some up.

Its a cheek weld not an ear weld--are you cocking your head to the side to get on the rifle or are you bringing the comb of the stock up to your face? It does make a bit of difference, try it out.

+1 for the Surefire plugs. Outdoors shooting rifles, they're all I use. Indoors I throw my Howard Leights on over them (pistol is the only thing I can shoot indoors, so cheek weld is a non-issue.)

It is known and documented you must wear ear protection with suppressors, if you wish to sustain no hearing damage.

The shape of your head will have a lot to do with what sort of ear protection will work for you. I can't wear any style muffs while shooting a rifle, so I use molded earplugs instead.

This......getting enough of my ear area in the way to make ear muffs a problem would just seem way too out of whack, and uncomfortable, for anything useable regarding "cheek weld".

Theres no way I can run electronic ears and shoot well, just the shape of my head...
Been running foamies for a while now.
Btw-if it happens "sometimes" as you said, work on your consistency...

It is personal preference and what works for you. I too can not get a good stock weld and even with pistol and carbine or shotgun work they just seem to get in the way or knocked off the ear just enough to be worthless for the .338 with a break shooting next to me. I wear either the Surefire plugs, custom molded, or the roll up yellow foam plugs (but not for to long as the yellow foamies irritate my ears). The only time I wear muffs is if I am teaching and not actually shooting. Whatever you decide spend some money and get good ones that fit and provide the best protection and comfort possible. Hearing loss really does suck.

I use foam plugs and then muffs over them. Then I raise my left muff (I shoot left handed) a little so it doesn't affect my cheek weld. I use foam plugs alone when shooting suppressed.
I am paranoid about losing any more of my hearing. Too many shots fired without protection when I was younger has left me with 70% loss in my right ear. Hunting with a rifle is always a problem - I just can't seem to make hearing a priority in the heat of the moment. One reason I love bowhunting so much.

I'll have to pay more attention when I cheek weld to ensure I'm doing it right when I'm shooting left handed (strong hand). I would bet a part of the issue right handed (when I looked through my neighbors scope) was not hitting the correct part of my face but I swear, no matter what I did I couldn't get a weld. He did have something attached on the rear stock which probably didn't help.

Once upon a time I was instructed to sew them to my cover/hat with about a 6 inch string so I wouldn't loose them. It was a handy idea when we didn't need them we just tucked them under our covers. Ear plugs one less distraction while trying to concentrate on shooting.
I have a whole pile in my shooting bag there's always some one needing a pair at a match anyways. I do take a pair of ear muffs though to wear in the pits and for scoring the other relays.

I angle my muffs forward a bit and that got them out of the way enough for me to get a good weld.

I have replaced mine yearly because at 15.00 a pair its nice to have that summer fresh feeling
I clean mine in hot water regularly but I just feel less scumbagy replacing them yearly YMMV. Lately been hitting the range only a few times a month so I can stretch it. SF states 3-6 months depending on use.

The Howard leights have not worked well for me either. No ear muffs work that well for a good cheek weld for me. I use mainly howard leight orange ear plugs with a 33db rating.

I have the peltor electronic Tactical 6-5. Good protection, I turned the muffs upside down so the thinner part is on the bottom, now I can shoot the rifles with no interference.
