Any PRS/NRL shooters located in East Gwinnett, Walton, Oconee, Morgan, Clarke, Rockdale, Newton or Barrow county area? If you are out there, where do you go for live fire practice? New to the sport and the area.
Match scenarios, centerfire. The ranges in this area that I've contacted all restrict shooting to prone or bench rest only. I know I can do dry fire practice, but want to do some live fire practice in PRS positions. The only options I've found is to reserve time at a range 3 hours away.
Up in Buford and go out to Elbert County Gun Club. Only goes to 400 but thats enough for the practice I'm doing right now and they've got targets and steel at 400. Only about $150 annually, but I think they have a wait list now. Glad to take you as a guest sometime if you want to check it out. GA Gun Club can be good for load checking (indoors so no wind) and slight movement (moving positions on a bench). I've heard RBGC has good matches and there's another spot up in the NE mountains I haven't checked out yet but it seems most of the closer PRS matches are in AL or at Arena Training Facility down in SW GA.
The only PRS type match that is close is the one mentioned in the second post which is at RBGC. The only other ones I'm aware of are sanctioned matches. The closest are at Cool Acres which is a 3 hour drive all others are farther.
There is a possibility of getting some PRS type practice off of barricades, etc. at Gun Site Hills in Lexington. The obstacles are used for a rimfire match but if you talk to the owner he may let you shoot his AR steel from that line (no guarantees). The PRS objects are in front of his main firing line so you would probably have to go during a weekday because you would basically shut down the main line to use the barricade line.
Look at NRL22 matches in Georgia - that would give you an idea on ranges that might allow some positional practice. NRL22 can be a great start.
Contact Cool Acres and see if they have any training opportunities.
I decided to pursue PRS 3 years ago. Took two classes at K&M in TN to learn the basics of PRS competition and long range rifle. I looked at it as a shooting vacation (look how much 3-4 days at Disneyworld cost). Joined PRS and have been competing for 3 years.
Odds are you will not find a range 30 minutes away so 3 hours may be a solution.
Finally, see if any hunting clubs are around you that you can join to practice "off season".
Masterpiece Arms is introducing our Bolt Action Academy. This concept is driven by a significant need within this long range shooting community to provide continuing education to all levels of shooters. In addition to the many new entrants to this wonderful shooting sport, the technology is...
