Hunting & Fishing Effective range of this load for medium game?

Running 178 eld m out of a 16.5" barrel at 2507 fps

300 will probably be the max I'd take a shot with this on game/pests but just curious with the velocity/energy numbers, what distance am I looking at to be effective?

My 308 is 2550 at muzzle. Rolled 4 smaller pigs at 440yds with one round. Range limit I think is based on accurately putting the round where it needs to go. Just my opinion

What round are you using, and barrel length?

You can kill an elk at 500 with that load.

Yeah 500 and in I’d be comfortable with those numbers with that bullets

My advice would be to set up a test medium at your max "comfortable" shooting distance and see how the projectile performs. When testing projectiles I use a 1# bologna pack covered by 1/4" leather. That is backed by 1/2" particle board and then several 1 gallong water jugs. It seems to provide me with a close approximation of how the same load works on critters

I've shot elk with comparable loads at just over 500.

My son dropped his first elk with a 16" 260 shooting 120gr bullets at 540yds. I think we often use more than is needed, which is fine.

Very nice! Ive parted ways with the 308 from my OP.
I have my tikka ctr that was cut down from 24" to 16.5 now.

My 140 eld load that shot well before, is running 2509 avg. now and still shooting around .5" so Ill use this for hunting this year 100-250 yards.
