Rifle Scopes Elcan

Guys,

Has anyone owned and spent any real time behind an Elcan? I played with one the other day, and it was way cool, just a flip of a lever, and you go from 1X to 4X. The guy who owned is said that they have a 1.5-6X on the way, how cool would that be! Please comment, Jason

I've got a couple of older Elcan C79's mounted on AR's.

Beautiful glass and built like tanks.

On the negative side the tritium has faded with age and Uncle Sam is skittish about sending anything mildly radioactive across the border to Canada for a refresh. The also look and weigh about the same as a brick.

I have no practical experience with the latest Elcan Specter DR's. They look great and I'm sure they still use great glass but their prices suck.

Guys are moving away from these. The thing doesn't hold a zero. Weird POI shifts between 1x and 4x. Try wiggling the knob on 1x. The reticle jumps around when doing so. Some people have problems with the external adjustments. And last but not least....come on, its 2009, everyone knows ARMS mounts suck.

Its big and heavy, not to mention expensive...wish they would have bought shortdots

I think your C79 is the OSX 3.4x, i have one of these & i agree the glass is great. I have it mounted on a safe queen HK 93. The negative side you mention is the reason i won't ever get another elcan besides the new ones prices. I've talked to a USA regional manager & the elcan factory to figure out a way to get the tritium refreshed but no luck. If i go tritium in the future i'll get a trijicon, at least they are local & have great CS.

Sorry no experience with the newer models.

The first-generation Specter DRs have the problems you've described. I have had no such problems with my second-generation S-DRs, nor with the ARMS mounts or the external adjustments. However, the ARMS mounts are not adjustable if you don't have a mil spec rail and luckily mine are OKay (otherwise you may not be able to fully close the levers). The one thing I don't like is there is no diopter adjustment for my corrected vision, so I have to shoot without my prescription glasses on. The S-DR is shorter than a Short Dot and weighs about the same (with Badger rings, the Short Dot weighs about 6 oz more than the S-DR). The Short Dot does have a diopter adjustment. I have to say I really like the current version of S-DR and would prefer the 1x-4x because it is true 1x. For coyote hunting, I usually have my scopes on 4x, so the S-DR works for me there too.

We've used them and the guys here with them like them alot... even a couple of the really old ones here with a lot of time downrange behind them.

Never saw anything that made us give pause to them, in fact I got in asap on the 1.5X-6X which should be here any day now, supposed to have shipped yesterday.

But I like them, the adjustments work, and have locks, so if they are shifting its' probably because the sets weren't engaged. and I suppose if you wiggle the lever you can get it to move, but the lever moves the lenses, so that is sort of its job.

Can't say to all the downsides, but we liked them, and the guys we had here with them liked them.
