Electric Razors, what do you use?

It's a sad week in the marsh here as my electric razor finally threw in the towel after many years of faithful service. This particular model was the Braun Series 7 790cc and I freaking loved this beast. Looks like this:

I had to look it up but I purchased this razor back in 2010... yep 15 years this has lasted me. Granted I had to routinely replace the cartridge & the cleaning solution inserts during that time, and the razor body looks a bit worse for wear but the battery was fine and it just ran like a champ. Like I said, I looked it up and I purchased it in 2010 for $250. Even with the cartridges & cleaning inserts, this has more than paid for itself with what I saved buying the Gillette Mach 3 or Shick Quattro razor heads over 15 years. I even came across the marketing from 2010 and they advertised it as being built to last 7 years so having more than doubled that I reckon I did damn good with this one.

Frankly the razor itself is still functioning fine and holding a charge but the plastic "lifter" on the razor finally cracked so while I'm able to limp it along, it doesn't sit right in the charging/cleaning dock so it's time to retire the old girl and move on.

I've hadn't had much luck with electric razors up until that Braun. I still recall the two electrics I had previous to it. Immediately preceding it was one of those Norelco triple head deals that actually was rather smooth against the skin but took an comically large number of passes over the same spots to actually get all the hairs and I remember thinking countless times that the whole reason I had an electric razor was to make the process of scraping my face faster and I would have been better off just using a standard hand razor & shaving cream for both time & results. Anyway- the Norelco looked like one of these jobs...

Before that one- I had a Remington something or another. That had its own unique set of issues. First off- I remember thinking that the engineers who designed it somehow managed to put a mini-lawnmower engine in it because it was loud as hell and would not only take the hair off your face but also the first layer of your epidermis and leave you with terrible razor burn. I've likely cut myself with that more times than with a straight razor, it was just an animal shredding anything it touched but I'll give it credit that it was at least fast & didn't require multiple passes over the same spot. Looked something like this...

Of course I had spent good money on them (although I don't remember either of them being exactly expensive) so I dealt with their idiosyncrasies for as long as they lasted and (perhaps mercifully) I don't think I got much more than 2 years out of either of 'em before they crapped the bed. I had all but given up on electric razors until countless folks told me to spend the money on a good Braun and how much better the Brauns were and how they wouldn't use anything else.
That always stuck in my head but I stubbornly went back to wet shaving. That is up until Gillette had come out with the Fusion razors and I was trying to make every dollar stretch as far as I could and the local grocery store stopped carrying the "cheaper" Mach 3 heads in lieu of the more expensive Fusion and I wasn't having much luck or saving much money with the Shick or Bic disposables so that's where the Braun Series 7 entered my life and damn if that wasn't one of the best purchases I ever made.

Anyway- as you can tell I really liked that damn razor and it completely changed my perspective of electric razors up until that point.

So I naturally went looking for a replacement and reading reviews on electric razors seems comparable to reading mattress reviews- very difficult to find trends as most of the opinions or love 'em or hate 'em. Panasonic seemed to do well with reviews but the negatives I found gave me flashbacks of the Remington model I had decades ago.

So I stuck with Braun again, this time their modern day equivalent of what my Series 7 was. Interestingly (to me) I was able to get it on sale for $300 which compared to the $250 I spent 15 years ago, well frankly I find that to be rather remarkable that there's only been a $50 swing. Anyway it should be delivered here tomorrow and the latest & greatest looks like this:

They're also still advertising it built to last 7 years (although with a 2 year warranty) So keeping my fingers crossed that I'll have similar luck with this one.

What about you- have you come across electric razors you either hated or loved? What are you using these days & what do you think of 'em?

    Forgot to add-

If you think I'm overly long winded- check out this guy: https://shavercheck.com/

This is without a doubt the most thorough reviewer of electric razors I came across. I personally geek out on all the information they include and would say that if you are in the market to replace your electric razor to at least check out that site to see if they reviewed it before.

If you hate the minutia- fear not because it looks like they do include a TL/DR at the beginning of their articles. Hope that is of some help to someone.

Never had good results with an electric.

I currently use a double edged safety razor and Feather blades.

The razor is a RazoRock Superslant. It slants the blade like a Guillotine, slices the hair rather than copping it.

I also use a badger hair brush and traditional shave soap.

Not because I love wet shaving, but because I’m cheap and it works. I can buy 100 razor blades for about $35 and it will take me about 2 years to finish off the ones I’ve got.

My job requires a clean shave. It’s dumb. But that Braun series 9 for the win. Manual shaving is way too time consuming/equipment intensive/fiddly to do every day.
In '08 I was offered a very good job with excellent pay and benefits. At the final interview with an executive director he told me that I was hired but that it's company policy that I would have to be clean shaven. I stood up and told him that I guess I am not your guy. Have a good day.

Even men with beards have to shave, at least I do. If I don’t I end up growing hair almost all the way up my cheek bones, and down my neck.

Gotta trim that shit or look like a damn cave man, and GEICO isn’t paying me to advertise.
That’s what a trimmer is for. Fuck shaving.

The only blades that’s touched my skin since I left the suck was the barber trimming the back of my neck or a kitchen knife when I’m not paying attention while cutting shit up.

    No love for waxing?
I thought this thread was about faces and necks.

    Not buttholes…

Unh Uhhhhhhh. Not after I saw the Video I forgot I had. It's entitled a "Complete Bikini Wax." And I mean "COMPLETE." Nothing left to the imagination. I can't post it here. It just about violates every MPT rule there is. I mean a full view of both the "Pink" and the "Stink" being waxed... the old fashion way with the ripping strips. I dunno how the ladies can stand the pain! They must be drugged!

So, you do the GQ gay man look?

    🤣

No, I just knock the stubble down within about 3/4” from the top of my cheek bones, and clear out the neck area so I’m not constantly itchy.

The beard hair on my upper cheek area just below the zygomatic arch isn’t thick enough to look decent so it gets shaved.

I have no desire to look like a homeless person, maybe that is the vibe you are going for?

So this was a 9 pro+ I got from Walmart. I'll be the first to say that Braun's naming conventions is frustrating to say the least. That said- I did look up the Costco model and it looks like a 9 Sport+...

And the model I got from Walmart was a 9 Pro+ for $300...

Aside from colors, I won't pretend to be an expert on the differences between the models but the one from Walmart apparently comes with a "hedgehog" looking thing & neoprene case in addition to what the Costco one does (and whatever other technical differences exist between the razors). I'll again point to the above link I shared because it's likely covered there.

Thanks for sharing though- I honestly hadn't checked with Costco (although I should have) but got excited when Walmart was selling a comparable model for a $100 or more less than Amazon offered it for.

I have never used an electric shaver. I have thought about it. But I have always used twin or three-blade shavers.
Personal preference I suppose. The "allure" to an electric razor is that it's faster & presumably less expensive since you aren't purchasing razor cartridges & shaving creams. The "trick" is to find a good one though.

So the razor came in & I got it set up. Initial impressions is that it's a keeper. Smooth shave, no irritation, and a quiet device (aka- doesn't sound like a weed whacker next to your face).

It's at least just as good as the series 7 but will need more time to tell if there's any comparable differences in performance. Either way- I'm a happy camper.

    Bud-

You're at what's known as a precipice. A decision point if you will. Either you can ignore me (I'll even give you a color by numbers picture on how to do it)

    1756614198612.jpeg

Or- you just embrace the notion that you CHOOSE to not only read my posts but also comment on them because you obviously want to and are afraid to miss 'em.

Either way, it doesn't matter to me but make a choice. Hit 'ignore' or give up the rhetoric of how "burdened" you are for what I contribute here.

    It's that simple.

Do it. I don’t ignore anyone.

    Dildo man.

Maybe I’ll go find screenshots and post them.

We've got that in common then- I don't ignore folks either. But I also don't make a habit of shitting on their posts either for the sake of being a blowhard.

    You do you.

ETA: I'm going to go back to talking about Electric Razors here. I frankly don't have the time or capacity to play these type of troll games.

Electric razors? Are those like gay electric cars?

    Shave like your grandpa did.

Just be careful, does a great job, but it will 100% fuck you up if you don’t respect it.

All CNC machined stainless steel, will never wear out.

Best style of razor out there. I do not know why someone would want to use an electric razor.

That is how I approach it. By NOT putting people on ignore, I can read all the funny bits or watch someone make a total and complete ass of themselves.

Or ignore manually. That is, read and not submit a reaction or reply. Or just not read at all if the thread title is explanatory enough to know that I don't need to read it.

For example, if there was a thread by a person called bendover about comparing the efficacy and comfort of various tampons, I will probably skip that thread.
