Took the rem 700 30-06 out to 505 yards today. Factory rifle with a little bastard muzzle brake, Harris bipod, and Athlon Argos 6-24. Shooting Hornady Superformance 165sst. This is the longest I have shot to date. I first shot from 100 and 300 to make sure all was good. Center hits proved all was working as should. Went to 505 yards and dialed 25 clicks up (mil scope) and 6 clicks right (7-10mph cross wind). First shot high (clean miss) next 3 just under the neck on a 18x30 steel silhouette, about 6-8” high of POA. I was happy to hit it 3 times in a row, but didn’t like being so high. Did I make the right elevation adjustments? I was about 60-80’ higher in elevation than where the target was, would that have anything to do with it?

Factory Hornady Superformance 165sst. Just going by Hornady ballistic chart.

meaning the chart on the box or online?

that's the problem. those numbers are just estimates.

you need ACTUAL muzzle velocity for that load in YOUR rifle.

what you can do now that you know what your actual elevation was at 500. is plug that info into an ballistic app and true your muzzle velocity.

so you measure in the scope how high you were hitting:

ex: you dialed 5 mils and POA was center plate. but impact was 6-8" high. measure how high in MILS that is. let's say you get .3 high.

so now you know you only needed 4.7 mils to hit center of the plate. most ballistic apps (i use ballisticARC) you can plug this into the app and it will tell you your velocity. enter that new velocity and you should be good to go

This is a half assed example cuz I made up numbers but still used my velocity for my gun.

But you can see where you input yardage, and actual dope and it spits out a correct muzzle velocity.

Option 2: buy a chronograph

Thank you! With the elevation it says to dial 1.9 mils, at level it had me dial 2.5, that is about an 8” difference if not mistaken.

WOW that calculates to MV of 3114. Ran my StrelokPro with the Superformance factory load and came up with the same 25 clicks up. When I input the impact being 3 clicks high I get a MV of 3114, thinking that might be close. A hand loaded 165 gr out of 30-06 could well be 2900 fps, that's the range of MV for stated Superformance load. I would expect Superformance 165 30-06 to be 300/3100 fps. Might need to get a MV check on that load in your rifle. You could skip choreographing and shoot at 400/500/600 with MV of 3114 and see how you POI goes.

I could have my guess on elevation difference from shooting position and target off. I am thinking it was about. 15-20 degree angle but will check the next time out. It’s hard to set up at different distances that far out as I have to go through cow gates about every 150 yards. 525 yards is the max I can get out with a clear view as well.i will get out again soon and gather more data. No plans on buying a chrono though.

OK I just ran my StrelokPro with 20% down and came up with 23 clicks. that gets closer, running 25% gets 22 clicks and accounts for the .3 MRAD difference. Running "StrelokPro" on iPhone 6 using "Density Altitude +" for added input and it works well for my 6.5C shooting PRS Matches, NRL 22ir and Silhouette 22lr.

I have to look into that app, currently using the Hornady app as that is the factory cartridge I am using. I am thinking a range finder with slope adjustment would be handy as well.

There are several other popular APP's. I just happened to start with Strelok and have appreciated the factory ammo data base, the scope/reticle data base and several other features that are easy to figure out and use. Hey I am 63 and not the most tech adept and I like this APP.
