Re: elk hunting colorado

You will get very little if any help from folks around here in regards to this topic. The guys that actually know and hunt good areas sure as hell aren't going to share details. They'd rather a fellow hunter drive hundreds of miles and spend thousands of dollars on a blind unsuccessful trip rather than share a few tidbits of advice or try to point someone in the right direction. It's not just this board, it's the same most places. You'd think that you were asking for GPS cooridinates to their exact honey hole location by the way some folks act. It was like pulling teeth just to get some info from people on places to hunt coyotes on public land last year when I went to Wyoming.

What type of hunt are you wanting to do? What season? You want full guide service? Drop camp? Do it yourself & pack in? What part of the state you wanting to hunt? S & SW desert type areas or more alpine type mountainous country?

How much or how little "public" you see all depends on how far you want to get off the beaten path everyday. If you plan to hunt within a mile or less of camp, your going to be seeing alot of hunters. If you want to walk in a good solid 4-6 miles away from all camps and roads, then your probability of seeing others is alot less likely.

Up here a drop camp or the like is the only way to get 'away' from the public but I've never not ran into several other hunters either on horseback or ATVs while in the back country. All the the people and previous bow/BP seasons drive the elk deep into the back-country so that's where you have to go to stand even a decent chance but remember you have to pack the meat out too..

Re: elk hunting colorado

California park north of Hayden has a lot of ok bulls in the later part of the rut but also quite a fit of hunting pressure. It also is s draw unit for archery. You would also probably have better luck in the White River National Forest more to the south. I live here in Hayden and know quite a few good outfitters.pm me with more details of your hunt and maybe I could be of help

Re: elk hunting colorado

I would try contacting local DNR agents. They hunt too and always enjoy good company on good hunts. See if anyone is/wants to go hunting with good people willing to pull their weight+. They will at least be willing to point you in the right direction...
