Hello all,

When I think about hunting for elk I have a video that plays in my head. I see packing in on horseback, glassing from the side of a mountain, and trying to get close enough to fill the fridge. I have narrowed down the area of Colorado I would like to hunt and now I am looking for an outfitter. I have two in mind and wondered if anyone on here by chance has any experience with either

West Elk Wilderness outfitter Gunnison, CO
Big Country Outfitters Creede, CO

Any and all info would be appreciated. if anyone has a different outfitter recommendation in that area I would love more options.

Thanks in advance.

I am heading out to Colorado next year for an elk hunt. My buddy has used Eagle mountain outfitters near Gunnison for the past three years. He has nothing but good things to say about them. I’ve never used them but will probably head out with him next year. What season are you looking into? We are doing first archery season.

I will add them to the list to check out. I am looking at 2nd rifle because I would like to do a mule/elk combo. I figure if I am going to hunt with an outfitter, I might as well go all the way!

never been on a guided hunt but your picture of elk hunting and what i have found out to be the reality are way different. Its the hardest thing i have dont both physically and mentally but also one of the most rewarding.

Oh no, you and I are on the same page as far as the physical and mental part. I am actively hiking and training in the crappy cold, windy weather. (plenty of that in Northern IL) Only thing I don't have is the elevation. I figure if I plan for the absolute worst then I wont be unpleasantly surprised. I am still trying to figure out when I am going to wake up at 5:30 to go hike in the cold shit weather and I am going to be like "LET'S DO THIS" instead of "let's do this.....tomorrow". So for now I drag my ass up so I can take advantage of the weather. I am training for a DIY but I am going to use an outfitter. Thx for reaffirming that i am on the right track.
