Entry Level Binocular/Spotting Scope Combo?

I am completely new to the observation device world. I have some high end riflescopes, and am familiar with what you get for the money and where the point of diminishing returns tends to be with them. I also understand the "buy once, cry one" and "you get what you pay for" sentiments when it comes to gear in general. With that being said, I need some advice when it comes to entry level binos and spotters.

My wife and I are planning a trip to Yellowstone and the Tetons this summer, and I would like to do some glassing while there. Of course when we get back, I will continue to use whatever glass I get for spotting while shooting. I would like to have both a spotter and a pair of binos, but if I can't get both within my budget, I will settle for having one or the other.

Right now I'm thinking I may be better off just getting a better pair of binoculars for general use than getting a sub par combo of both devices. What would you consider to be a bare minimum quality/price spotting scope? Any spotter will get you a big image, but without good clarity and resolution, it kind of defeats the purpose. Any cheaper models good enough to see paint splatter, hits on painted steel to 1,200 yards?

If I could get both for $1,000 or less I would probably do it, but if I can't get a good enough spotter in that price range, I would probably spend $300-$500 on a set of binos and save for a spotter later. Sorry if these are dumb questions, but like I said, I am a complete noob when it comes to observation stuff. I usually shoot by myself, so getting this kind of gear hasn't been high on my priority list. I just use my rifle scopes as spotters right now, but it would be nice to have one going forward.

Bushnell Legend T 15-45x spotter (FFP, mil reticle) and Bushnell Forge 10x binos will keep you under $1k and very happy. I happen to have that exact combo on my tripod, and I get a lot of use out of both. The Legend T isn't as good as the $1k+ spotters, but it's probably the best cost vs features of anything remotely in the price range. The Forge 10x binos punch WELL above their weight class, easily holding their own against binos costing 2-3 times as much.

Can't help with your scope selection but if this is your first trip to Yellowstone keep an eye open for the volunteers in orange safety vests on the side of the road. They go around the park spotting wildlife and will direct you to good spots to see them. Got to see wolf cubs and their mom playing in a large clearing my first day there. Watched them for almost 30 minutes.

There were some sellers on eBay moving out some Nikon Monarch 5 16x56 and 20x56. You might want to find a decent tripod for one of those. A good set of 10x42s is much more versatile. I have a set of 16x56 Monarch. I am pretty happy with them, but they live on a tripod. I have a set of Steiner predator 10x42s I carry with me. I wanted Swaro or Meopta for my tripod bino, but the budget wasn't there.

Check out Nikon's MONARCH 7 10x42 bino's, awesome sub $500 bino's. Backed by Nikon's No-Fault Warranty will give you piece of mind in case you drop them while on your great vacation. I have a pair and love em. I also bought the MONARCH 7 8x30's for my scouting bino's.

I think I've decided to just stick with a pair of binoculars for the trip, probably some 10x42's. I'll save up for a spotter later on. I was considering spending up to $500 for binoculars, but we're having to buy some other stuff for the vacation. Anyone have suggestions for a pair in the $300 range?

Nikon's MONARCH 5 10x42's come in right at $300. Give Doug a call and maybe he can help you out even more? Nikon's MONARCH 7 10x30's are very nice as well for $400.

I have a set of the discontinued Steiner 10x42 with reticle (I think they're 10x42T). I got them used on the optics exchange for $350 about a year ago. They're great, I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

If Doug's offering has similar glass I wouldn't hesitate to take him up on it.
