In November, 1967, I came home on emergency leave from Vietnam. My brother (who just completed his tour in SE Asia) was at Letterman General, in a coma, after being hit by a car.
He was in a ward with several wounded from Vietnam. Ernest Borgnine visited the hospital and spent a good deal of time with our wounded soldiers. He wouldn't allow any news people in the ward while he was there. He just wanted to visit and offer encouragement to out wounded.
I set at my brothers bed a few days, and there was Ernest Borgnine, not telling people how good of a actor, or talking about his work in movies and TV, but enchouraging our soldiers. He would help the orderlies make the beds and care for our guys.
I have a picture of him at my brothers bed side, I'm on a road trip now but when I get home I'll try and post it.
I put Ernest Borgnine in the same class as Ann Margret and Bob Hope, only he wasn't there for the shows.
Heaven is a brigther place with his arrival. I hope he can take time to visit my brother (who passed on a couple years ago) again when he gets there.
