Stupid, I know. "If you want a semi-auto .22lr you get a ruger 10/22." I had one, and I loved it, but recently I passed it on down to my nephew and am itching to get another .22lr auto loader. I love the idea of the takedown 10/22, but this Rem 597 HB has really caught my eye and am really curious if anyone has some experience with it.

had a 597 in the late 90's it was a good rifle the only complaint I had with it was the magazines jammed continuesly!!! heard that problem has been fixed but got rid of mine because of it. might wanna check out magnum research they make a semi auto that is a real tack driver. I have one and love it!!! a little more spendy to the tune of about $600 though. guess ya get what ya pay for most of the time.

Thanks for the reply guys. I am still up in the air about getting a semi auto, but I think I will go back to a 10/22 if I get one. That magnum research looks pretty sweet, I would just like to get to handle one before I would sink that kind of money into one. As far as the AR .22 upper goes, I bought one a while back and just wasn't pleased with how it shot compared to my old rebarreled ruger.

Semi auto I have 10/22 from 1966 and one from last year, a Nylon 66 from decades ago and the 597 I picked up a couple years ago. The 597 is the most accurate, its not even close. A friends 597HB is super accurate and its my next purchase. The 597 trigger is better and has a lock bolt open after last round feature that I prefer.

If you pull the action out of the 597, loosen both set screws on the guide rods to just proud of finger tight, runs superb. After I did this it rarely has feeding issues, way less than side by side with my 10/22s using the same ammo. The aftermarket 30 round mags are junk but the 5 factory mags I have feed superb.

To me and its my opinion right or wrong to whomever but I do have experience with both, I would go with 597HB or just the 597 every time and will pick another 597 the HB soon.

good luck and hope this helps

I got a 597HB for Christmas from my father and it shoots great. Has the 5R barrel on it and I'd stick it next to my 10/22 with the magnum research CF barrel in terms of accuracy. The Ruger sports a Hogue stock and KIDD trigger so those are obviously nicer than their factory Remington counterparts but receiver to receiver, Remington wins. My only complaint is that there's not as much aftermarket support for the 597.

I was curious about opinions as well. I'm looking to grab a semi .22lr and was torn between the 597HB or the 10/22... Seems to be hit or miss. More aftermarket support for the 10/22 but it seems like the 597HB will run rings around a 10/22 when you get a good one... Just from what I've gathered so far.

I love mine...Very accurate, feed number one, easy to clean... I recently freefloat my barrel and get muche better group a 75y

Cons: really dont love any ammo, my suggest buy many 50rd box instead of buying a brick first time...

Mine love CCI Mini mag roung point, Wolf target

here result at 75y yesterday morning
