Since Uncle Sugar and I parted ways I can now pick and choose my gear rather than having it issued to me. I prefer DSA's fixed stock, 18" barrel FAL. Every rifle has its good and bad points. This rifle is no different.

I have to admit to a relatively new love affair with Aimpoints. I was always an iron sight guy until the first time I played with an Aimpoint. I'm now a true believer. The question then is how to marry the FAL with an Aimpoint.

DSA's heavy duty scope mount is HEAVY and has a reputation in some quarters for causing poor accuracy because of the torque it puts on the upper receiver (the fix for this is purported to be removing the front left locking plate). There is the A.R.M.S. #3 mount which is not as heavy as the DSA but still is no lightweight. It doesn't impart the same torque because it uses the standard dust cover mounting method.

Since all I wanted to do was mount a 7oz Aimpoint, I thought these two options were maximum overkill. So I bided my time not really happy with the choices.

Recently, a fellow down in Texas came up with a way to mount a length of Picatinney rail to a standard FAL dust cover. Voila! The perfect mounting solution for my Aimpoint. I've been putting it through its paces for the past several weeks and I'm impressed. It works as advertised. At this point I'd have to say this scope mount is good to go and am thinking about getting another one to hold a glass scope. That way when I want to switch between the red dot and glass all I have to do is swap the entire dust cover / rail / scope assembly rather than having to buy quick release rings and worrying about how repeatable the zero is.

If anyone is looking for a truly lightweight mounting solution for a FAL, contact Brian Brodhead at [email protected].

Here are a couple of pictures of the Aimpoint mounted on the rail:

Re: FAL sight rail

Nice looking setup. Have you actually tested repeatability? The fit of the FAL dust cover isn't very secure as it simply slides into the grooves of the upper receiver and has a little bit of play fore & aft when the receivers are locked up. Did they do something to the cover to address this problem?

In fact, I have. During my first range session I zeroed the sight then removed and reinstalled the dust cover twice during subsequent shooting. There was no change in the point of impact.

The rail extended ever so slightly aft of the dust cover when it arrived on my doorstep. I simply filed it down until the upper and lower receivers would easily lock together but with the rail just barely kissing the lower receiver. There is no discernable fore and aft movement of the dust cover now.

Not really a true co-witness. While the red dot floats above the front sight, the rear sight is too low in the field of view to be useful.

Re: FAL sight rail

Interesting set up. I've got the DSA rail on my FAL and will be mounting an ML3 as soon as GAP gets the bbl cut down and threaded for my AAC Blackout mount.

Your setup looks pretty nice, especially if it's lightweight and works!

So far it works fine. Now if I only had 20,000 rounds of .308 laying around so I could torture test the thing.

There is only one way it could be lighter, if the rail had been mounted on an alloy dust cover instead of the steel dust cover. The major selling point for me was the weight. Having carried a rifle professionally for many years and for what felt like thousands of miles, I have a deep appreciation for lightweight gear.

Re: FAL sight rail

Nice setup!
My 'GO-TO' is also a DSA carbine w/ DSA HD scope mt cover and an Aimpoint TI [ about 3 to 4 oz[?] less than the C3].

Do you have an actual weight on your topcover mount to compare to the DSA?

Will be contacting Brian about one of his mounts! Thanks

A man after my own heart. After carrying an M-16 professionally for more years than I care to admit, I find the power of the .308 comforting. The T1 is very nice but I couldn't justify the expense. I have no need for night vision anymore so the trade off became money versus weight. I came down on the side of money. The C3 cost $400 from SWFA including flip covers, rubber sight cover, and mounting ring.

I don't know the actual weight of the rail-top cover combo. The top cover is a standard steel one and the rail is machined out of anodized aluminum. It is noticeably lighter than the DSA heavy duty scope mount, which I also have.

Re: FAL sight rail

i have worked many fals over years and have one today ..scope mounting is one only weakness on many weapons including the fal ... i like to see a milled scope mounting rail on the right side of the receiver like Russian rail with a recoil stop at the end [to the shooter side]
