After having my 9 year old son in the woods several times this year with no success we began our last day morning hunt with the pressures of hoping to take a deer. At first light a deer entered the field at 159 yards and still quite dark I could tell by the deers posture it was a buck but could not tell antler size. I watched him for a few minutes until I was comfortable it was safe to shoot and told him he would have to use my rifle, Savage .260 build with 140 bergers, since I knew his 6x would not draw the light like my Leupy Mark 4. I did not tell him it was a buck to ease the adreneline. At the crack he dropped with a perfect high shoulder hit. When we walked up to him we saw more headgear on this dude than we would have ever expected! No ground shrinkage here for sure! 17" inside spread 18 1/4" outside. After the pictures we changed spots and jumped another 8 pointer which I took with a 60 yard running shot again high shoulder, lucky most likely, but never the less two buck same morning, same rifle, what more could a father and son ask for.

Thanks Sinister and Kimmel! My sidekick hasn't quit thanking me for taking him all day, I am Blessed and "nothing more" is right on!

Don't think you're too far behind him on the excitement meter there, Pops!

Congrats to you both. Take that rascal out as often as you can now...feeding the blood-lust early is the key to making it last for ever.

Re: Father and Son Hunt in VA

Last day hunting does add anxiety but I hope the learning curve must be a bit easier where you can shoot two deer in a day! That doesn't happen in all states.

My Dad and Brother are both Taxidermist, works out to be a great family benefit! He already has a spot picked out on the wall for his mount.

That's awesome! Glad to see VA is climbing up this year with some excellent buck kills. I know from experience it was totally wonderful for you and your son. Congratulations.
Carroll County too no doubt! Whacked mine just outside of Wytheville Friday a.m. after Turkey day.
