We are expecting a little boy soon and I was wondering what a good diaper bag would be? One I can carry an AR in and some diapers? J/K- I know this is a shooting forum but I would rather carry around a gear bag that does not look like the ones my wife picks out.. It's our first kid so I don't know shit about shit. I am seriously looking to get a gear bag of some sort that is not all light blue and ga% looking. I'm not sure of size etc. Maybe I should just deal with what she picks out but that usually sucks.. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks all,
SFU

If you got money I highly recommend this system... Diaper bag included. My daughter is now 18 months and we still use it. It's a very masculine system. I get compliments all the time on it. The best part about it is the car seat swivels to put the baby in which saves your back during that first year. If you get the panniers for the stroller that will hold your weapons and ammo. I personally stuff it with photography equipment when I'm heading to the park. You won't see another family using this system either.

I ran a Maxpedition Colossus with great success. While it is somewhat larger in comparison with the other Versipack offerings, it really lends itself to the job as it gives you tons of space for everything from basic diapering needs, to food/snacks/drinks, meds, change of clothes, etc., plus an HK USPc .45acp and an extra mag (you must supply your own sidearm/mags as they are not included with the Colossus). ;)

all of the above...my recommendation is either A) get a bag with a shoulder strap (detachable or not, your call), or a backpack (my personal preference), or one of the "Dad bags". I had a one strap backpack system (Dad bag) with my second kid and loved it while he was little. Then as my daughter got into gym/dance/cheerleading (shes only 4 mind you) I found myself trying to over stuff that little bag. I bought a condor two day assault pack (minus the belt), and I shit you not...its the perfect load out for diapers, sippy cups, and a change of clothes for two kids, for a full day of being out and about. Just got back from Disneyland/Seaworld which I carried it everyday we were there, it was perfect for everything you might need plus leaving the stroller for cargo space for all those overcharged souveniers you will buy.

As opticsspecialist said "get a good comfortable stroller, it's worth it's weight in gold" .. this is the TRUTH

Im glad some one posted this, the Wife and I are having a baby boy due here in the second week of May. Some good info in here. Sounds like Im either picking up a Maxpedition,or 511 Covrt bag.

Thanks for all the info posted.

Not tactical but most practical I'd say is a messenger bag from dadgear.com. Side pockets for bottles, quick access wipe holder, even has little straps to hang it from stroller handles. Lots of different designs available, and the flaps (only part with designs) come off with Velcro. I have several flaps that my wife got me with the bag.
Oh and CONGRATS!

I prefer a backpack as it keeps the load centered over both shoulders, as opposed to slung over a single shoulder (messenger bag, dad bag, traditional diaper bag, whatever)... Some diapers, a few wet wipes, a snack or two, a bottle and a bit of milk doesn't sound like much, however... Remember when you went [somewhere] and asked your wife to hold your keys/wallet/sunglasses/SOMETHING in her purse? Well, now YOU are the pack mule and your all saddled up. She will see that bag and not be happy until you are carrying EVERYTHING! Also, while we never sprung for one, the frame packs that are kid carriers with under-storage for diapers and such are GENIUS! It never failed that I would wind up carrying the diaper bag and the kid (we have 2 now) by the end of a day out at the zoo/aquarium/park/store/wherever. I would also steer away from a tactical bag if only because they tend to be spendy, tend to draw attention, and a diaper bag has a high likelihood of encounters with old milk, dirty diapers, and used food wrappers. My last piece of advice is buy something you will use after the kid is out of diapers. We are still using the [third] "diaper bag" we bought with our first son- almost 8 years later. The first was one of those you will never see a guy carrying. The second was better but uncomfortable. This one is a laptop pack that has plenty of pockets and pouches for snacks/drinks/sunblock/spare shirts on the weekend (no more diapers here, suckers!!), but also does double duty carrying laptops and work stuff during the week.

Definitely don't cave in and get talked into a fruity colored/looking diaper bag by your wife or others. I ended up getting a "real" diaper bag but it was made by Eddie Bauer. Its deep green with some hunter orange detailing. It has a great shoulder strap but I feel weird draping it over my shoulder and carry it like a gym bag. To be quite honest, any tactical range bag for pistols would work as a diaper bag. All your doing is putting spare clothes, diapers, snacks, sippy cups, a few toys and such in it. Not too much difference in cargo carrying characteristics between a "real" diaper bag and a small range bag. In that sense you can roll as tacticool as you want and not compromise your man card.

Yepper--fucked. Just go to your lovely bride's closet, pick out her biggest purse, ensure empty, then throw if over your should like you own it.

I simply brought one of my day packs to the cleaners so my wife was certain no bear blood and that's what I used for daddy days. Great in theory, but honestly in the rush of things I often times ran trout the door with my wife's pink/purple paisley thingy.

Having a little man helps, we had a girl, so I've been freakin lathered in pinks/purples and paislies. Think that will the pattern of her first McMillan stock.

My wife is due the 24th of May. She really liked the 5.11 Rush Messenger bag. They were on sale for $80, so we figured we'd give it shot, and if it doesn't work out, we haven't blown too much money and I can use it as my laptop bag.

Echo what wildwillalaska said, we have 2 daughters and after a while I don't even notice i'm carrying around pink and purple or zebra striped (oldest's current favorite) stuff anymore. I swear I'm absorbing estrogen transdermally holding them, cause gone are the days I look for Coyote, FDE, or Multicam as goto color options and instead find myself thinking stuff like "I wonder if they make that Kestrel in purple, kids would get a kick out of that". Wouldn't trade a minute of it for the world though, congrats on becoming a Dad, BEST JOB EVER!

Embrace fatherhood and accept it can't all be tactical

I ended up going with a very boring bag that can be slung off the stroller. My wife was never going to carry around a pack and I was never going to spend the time transfering from one to the other on weekends when I'm on duty. In the summer, slinging it all in a single bag and letting the stroller take the strain doesn't look cool but it sure does make it easy.

dude, save your money, baby's cost a lot of money...let your wife take care of the diaper bag, thats womens shit anyway. that thing is gonna be destroyed w/ milk, shit, pee, old snack food, and basically germs galore. if you want a tactical bag, get it, but not as a diapy bag

its smarter not to look all tacticool when you have the chitlen with you. your not gonna look like some badass carrying a shit filled diapered baby no matter what. its nicer not having people eye fuck your bag like there might be something cool in it cause its just the ghey bag your ol lady bought...

Im loving my Maxpedition Mongo Versipack. Its just about perfect. Plenty of room for all the essentials, plus some room left over for your EDC crap. And its not so huge that it looks silly. I have a good deal of Maxpedition stuff, and its all pretty indestructible.

Use a back pack, don't be a retard.

Backpacks suck for this role dude. The messenger bag or Maxped Versipacks are much more ergonomic. I can easily look inside my Maxpedition Mongo and retrieve what I need while holding my kid in my arms while walking . If I had to stop walking, set my kid down, and take a backpack off...to get WTF i needed every time, Id shoot myself. Why go through all that.

Not trying to look cool or llike a badass, Slim Shady... I am not carrying around the stupid bag she wants. She can have her bag and I'll have mine I guess. Hell- half of the maxpedition bags are cheaper than the diaper bags she has looked at.. Plus after the kid grows out of diapers I will have a bag to use for other crap..

Just remember if you go with a backpack you can't wear one of those front baby loaded manpoose. My neighbor hauls one of his kids around the yard in those front papoose things and looks silly ridiculous. I usually only see hairy armpit women that smell like "nature" wearing those. Like I said before, just get a pistol range bag and use it for baby stuff or gun stuff. Congrats on the daddy thing. Thought it would ruin my life but turned out just the opposite.

I bought a Kelty Kids Carrier Expedition back pack... <http://www.sierratradingpost.com/kelty-kids%E2%84%A2-expedition-carrier-~p~85905/> Sure it weighs over 8#... but ad over 3500 cu in of additional storage when needed... and besides the kids love being up and checking things out.... The windscreen and there is a zip off backpack, changing pad, diaper holder, and wet wipe holder.... I can't believe they discontinued it... I sold it when we were done having kids... then regretted it when #3 came around.... Our youngest has been up and down more mountains in this thing, than he has ever climbed in his 13 years under his own 2 feet....

Congrats... Kids are kewl... but man they can eat up your time and disposable income if you aren't careful... The Expent Father and A Father's First Year, are great books for new fathers...

Remeber to take lots of pictures... back up the photo gallery on the puter... and remember to have fun!!!

We have the eddie b bag, but I am embarrassed to admit the best one we have used is a backpack made by fisher price.

Fisher Price Backpack Diaper Bag - Grey - Fisher-Price - Babies "R" Us

for $35 it has features that make functioning easier. Insulated bottle pouch keeps bottles pretty warm. Access to baby wipes without opening a single pocket (huge plus!). plenty of storage in main compartment. Sanitizeable pacifier pocket right up top. Best 2 twentys we have spent thus far.

Damn, that does look pretty high speed. Hit it with some Krylon and it'd be tactical GTG. :D
