Favorite Large Rifle Primers and why? I am reloading 3006. Working on a good load and was wondering if there is a favorite LRP all are using. I am currently using Winchester Large Rifle Primers. What are the big differences that people have noticed, if any..... Thanks in advance..

I buy the federal GM match primers for all of my calibers.
Also it comes in a GOLD box it's very valuable. ? I was able to sell one these GOLD boxes in the 215m several years ago for $100 when these GM match primers where HARD to find. But in all seriousness Federal primers are the softest primer cups around and fire every time for me.

CCI Magnum Primers. I use them for all cases requiring a larger rifle primer. Just be sure and work up loads for them. I gave up years ago stocking two sizes of primers for larger rifle cases.

In my precision bolt gun, I’m using CCI BR-2.
In everything else, I use whatever I can find a good deal on. I have CCIs that I paid $10/1000 for at a gun show, Winchester’s, and I have 5000 Wolf SR primers that I bought during Obama’s crazy gun hoarding days. I’ve never tried S&Bs though.

I’ve had very good luck with the S&B large rifle primers. Mostly use Federal Gold Medal.

Oddly enough, the only primer That didn’t fire for me was a Federal Gold Medal. Happened this spring using some old stock from the late 1990’s. Pulled the round apart only to discover the primer compound pellet was missing and made it past QC.

Lesson learned! Now I do a thorough inspection of the primers prior to loading.
Thankfully I was not on a hunt or in a situation where it mattered.

I have the primer taped to the packaging with lot number, considering sending it back if for nothing more than their reference.

"Back in the day" during the panic years finding the 210M GMM was difficult, so I was using CCI 200. Then I came upon a pretty solid price / availability and bought several thousand of the Federal 210Ms. I use both the CCI 200 still and the Federals now and honestly I don't see a measurable difference.

I don't buy anything Federal if I can get away with it. When I was a kid buying 22lr ammo, Federal just sucked...sucked enough a kid noticed it. I bought either Remington or Winchester. Ever since then, I have avoided buying Federal anything any chance I get. Silly, huh?

I'm a WRL user also. Mainly because they seem to perform well in my workups and they are super easy to find. Federal M210M's can be a pain to find when I need them and they are always around when I don't need them. Once I have a recipe I don't like to mess with it.

CCI has been my preferred primer brand for more years than I care to remember. I've had fewer issues with CCI than any of the others. Although there have been pitifully few issues over the years, there have been a few.

I have also used Federal GM Match in my competition loads, mostly because of the hype. They worked fine.

I have primarily used CCI 200 and BR-2 over the years but allways have 1500-2000 210M and 215M primers for testing and back up.
For medium sized cases ranging from 308win to 65 CM i have switched to running only CCI 450 when possible to make things a little simpler.

Currently using Federal 210M. Previously used CCI and Winchester - I haven't noticed much of a difference, however the Winchester primers were flattening on loads well before others.

?Not silly, I feel the same way about Remington and Winchester primers?

I used CCI-200's for 30 plus years. A older gentleman at church was getting out of the reloading hobby and gave me 1000 WLR's. I now used both and get good results with both of them.

CCI-200's have my vote. I've finished testing large rifle primers for my Ruger Precision project and only found a 2fps difference of SD when compared to the BR-2's. The price difference doesn't justify using the BR-2's in my opinion. I can get the same SD's with S&B primers but the nasty little things are hard to seat. They are slightly larger in diameter which could be useful when the primer pockets start to open up with the CCI's.

I use a lot of WLR/WSR (or CCI 200/CCI400), mainly for when I'm not actually match shooting.

For the 30-06, it's about all I use; and I load up a lot of Enbloc M2 Ball Equivalent.

I used Winchester WLR for several years, mainly because they were a dollar or two per/thou cheaper at my LGS . Changed to CCI 200's one time when they were out of the WLR's and noticed a small improvement in group size, and consistency. I've been using the CCI's since. Wasn't a huge difference, but every little bit helps and I can use all the help I can get.

I have only used CCI Primers in Handgun and Rifle reloading. Couldn't get them back in the Obama Panic Days and bought/used Winchester. They went bang as well but I preferred CCI.

No reason for me to change now. All of my recipes use CCI primers and they have never failed me so there is no reason to fix that which is not broken.

I’ve been using Federal 210M primers in my 243. When I dump them out into a tray prior to priming, anvil side up, there is a wide variation of compound on top of the anvils. I’m not sure what the function of this hardened compound is but it ranges from almost none to completely covering the anvil. What is this stuff and does it matter to the functioning of the primer. Right now I’ve been sorting primers by amount of compound.

I bought a single box of 100 Federal 215M primers for my 300WM and they look the same. It’s kind of put me off of Federal primers.

I’ve noticed the same thing (on 210). It put me off too at first but I bought 1000 of them :/ I’ve used up about 800 now and no issues.

Forgot to mention that I had also done a bunch of tests with CCI, Win and Fed primers using a variety of different 5 shot loads w/ h4350 and Fed/Win primers (all LR) had the best results in terms of SD and grouping. Each primer had 5 different load charges tested on the med-hot charge. Your rifle/caliber/brass/bullet/powder combo may produce something completely different though.
