My gun (Rem700 VLS 308) has never shot factory loads very well. Today I tried Fed. 168 Gold Metal Match. 75 degrees, slight breeze from 12 o'clock, 850 ft. elevation.

I switched scopes so the first 3 shots are getting it dialed in. Shot over sand bags.

Shot 1: 2666 fps, on paper
Shot 2: 2672 fps, adjusted wrong way
Shot 3: 2624 fps, right on

Shot 4: 2672 fps, 1 inch high
Shot 5: 2672 fps, 1 1/4 inch high
Shot 6: 2699 fps, 1 inch high
Shot 7: 2677 fps, 1/2 inch above point of aim
Shot 8: 2682 fps, 1 1/2 inch higher than point of aim

I tried to wait about 1 minute before the next round. Is the velocity consistent with what everyone else is getting? Also am I right by thinking that the rounds tend to go higher as fouling builds up and the barrel heats up? If so then why does my reload shoot better? Shouldn't the Fed Gold Match load shoot better?

After firing the Federal Match I cleaned the barrel let it cool a bit then shot my reloads of 175gr SMK and 43.0gr of Reloader15, 2600 fps.

5 shots waiting about 1 minute between shots. 1 1/2 high (which is what I want) and grouped 1/2 inch. That's great for me. My reload shoots about 2600 fps, is that to slow to make it to 1K yards?

Re: Fed Match & my reload

I was told some of my 168 FGMM clone load keyholed at 1K a couple weeks ago.
They (and FGMM 168) run 2725fps says my Shooting Chrony, but my dope says they run about 2675..

Nevermind, I didn't see the 175's at the end of the post and thought you were asking about your 168's making it to 1K............

Re: Fed Match & my reload

Are your reloads seated longer than the factory ammo?

The factory ammo was a 168 and your reloads 175. Have you tried reloading 168s to see if you rifle just happens to like 175s better?

Re: Fed Match & my reload

No I haven't. I always went with the 175s for longer shooting, out to 1000 yards and stuff. I just happened to see the 168 FGMM in the store and thought I would try it.

I know I'm comparing apples to oranges.
