I am trying to get more information about the following product:

Federal American Eagle Ammunition 7.62x51mm (308 Winchester) 168 Grain Open Tip Match

I was looking for a more economical alternative to the Federal Premium 168 Grain Sierra Match King Hollow Point Boat Tail to use in bolt action FN SPR and DPMS LR-308’s chambered in .308 win. I understand that the American Eagle round is marketed for M1A use but was wondering if it can also be used in rifles chambered exclusively for .308 win. Does the above product have a NATO case length or a .308 Winchester case length? Correct me if I am wrong, the NATO (7.62x51mm) case is longer than the commercial .308 case.

Thank you.

Tom

Re: Federal American Eagle Ammunition 7.62x51mm

I ran a half box of it through my lr308 with the 18" bull barrel. It wouldn't group less than 2moa at 100. I was very dissapointed. It shot about 1moa to 1.5moa at 100yrds through my rem700 20" with cyclone suppressor. I've not shot it through a chrony, but I believe the problem with it and my lr308 is that it is pushed too fast. I couldn't run my bolt gun reloads through the lr308 because of the velocity either.

DONT RUN THAT SHIT IN YOUR RIFLE. I am sure it is fine ammo, but you are shooting precision rifles...right? If you shoot shitty ammo, you religate yourself to shooting a shitty rifle. This is an expencive hobby/sport/addiction/lifestyle, if you can not accept that, then move on...At the very least, start loading your own.

not a bad plinking round but I don't think I would use it to see what your rifle is capable of. Stay with Federal FGGM, Black Hills, Corbon to shoot the "good stuff" of better yet learn to reload.

Every rifle's different...and that ammo might just not be half-bad after all. There's ammo for printing groups, and there's ammo for making noise and having fun. No reason at all why you can't have both... And depending on the price, and whether he has the time and equipment to reload, it may still be a worthwhile alternative to FGMM or the like.

Re: Federal American Eagle Ammunition 7.62x51mm

I don't think it's that bad for a plinking ammo. Costs $16.50, no tax because the BX stocks them, so it's easy for me to get. Which is like $2 more than PMC bronze and shoots right around 1 MOA (for my lack of skill). Here's my groups while zeroing my new 700 SPS-V

Box states a MV of 2650 FPS. I made a ballistics card from JBM and used 2700 FPS due to my 26'' barrel. It says I need 19.9 MOA to reach 700 yards from a 100yd zero. It was spot on with 20 MOA.

Re: Federal American Eagle Ammunition 7.62x51mm

Bottom line, 7.62x51 NATO and .308 Win brass is close enough to call generic. Mixing brass from different sources will not ensure consistency. USGI brass tends to weigh more and have a somewhat smaller internal capacity.

Accuracy-wise, whether a particular commercial loading will do well in your rifle is something you have to find out for yourself. 'Match' and 'Premium' designations indicate more care is supposedly put into fabrication to deliver consistency, but suitibility of that more consistent load is still something that will depend in large part on the rifle itself.

In general, Federal American Eagle loads are considered neither premium nor match ammo, but will do just fine for zombies, etc.

It's one thing to be demanding about what you shoot in a quality rifle, it's another to be paranoid about it. A bolt gun should be able to process most any NATO or .308 load that chambers, assuming it's within SAAMI pressure specs. Yes, quality rifles probably shouldn't be used for plinking, IMHO because bore life is a finite thing and unless the rifle being used for its intended purpose, it's probably far better to be shooting a .22lr.

Re: Federal American Eagle Ammunition 7.62x51mm

My Surgeon Scalpel shoots it in less than 1/2MOA at the 100 line. I had ONE ragged hole success with it and handed it to my buddy that is not a good shooter. He shot right at 1/2 MOA and a buddy that has plenty of Ranger Btn. experience duplicated the 1/2. The fewer of you that shoot it, the more available it will be for me when I need resupply.

DONT SHOOT IT IN YOUR GUNS.

Re: Federal American Eagle Ammunition 7.62x51mm

I ran a box of this stuff thru my Tac Ops Echo 51 for the first time last week and again yesterday. It shot very well, sub 1/2moa for a couple 5 shot groups. I usually shoot FGM, it had the same exact zero. I will buy some more when i am short on FGM. i can get it for $17 a box vs. $20 a box for FGM. I'll have to see how it does at longer ranges.

Re: Federal American Eagle Ammunition 7.62x51mm

I have shot both the GMM and the AE and have found the AE to be a little hotter out of my gun. I needed juts a little less elevation to make the same hits out to 600 yards. Accuarcy at 100-400yards was the exact same as GMM for me. I'd be more than happy with this stuff for a match out to 600 yards.

Re: Federal American Eagle Ammunition 7.62x51mm

At my Gun Club, in one precision rifle. AE shot better than FGMM 168 for 3 different shooters.

It is worth a try, and lucky you if the cheap stuff shoots well out of your rifle.
