Hunting & Fishing FFP or SFP Scope.

I'm getting a new scope for my 22-250 and was wondering if I should get a first focal plane reticle or a second focal plane reticle. I will be shooting out to 600yards at Prairie Dogs and coyotes.

Smiley if you are going to be ranging using the reticle then ffp is really nice. Other then that I don't see a plus in having a ffp. But at the end of the day its your decision.

My .22-250 sees a ton of action in late spring, early summer shooting prarie dogs. I run an FFP scope on it as well as my .308 I only rarely range with the reticle.

BUT! When you get a solid dope chart and/ or a good ballistics program on your phone (Shooter is great) or a Kestrel 4500 with Horus they will give you wind holds in your choice of reticle. I use MIL/MIL scopes exclusively. Therefore when you have your wind holds in MILs it doesn't matter at what magnification your scope is set on you can hold the correct windage.

The ability to use a FFP mil-dot reticle for holds at any magnification is great, but depending on your magnification range, it may not be all that necessary. I use a 3-9X42 SS on my rifle, but the only times I have held over were at 9 power... in which case, a SFP would have worked equally as well.

Yes FFP has worked well for me. It makes ranging easier. I tend to stay in the upper range of magnification, but if you go FFP take time to look at different reticule options. At the low end of the scope, some reticules are very hard for me to see well.

I'm not a competition shooter and therefore, don't see the benefit of having a FFP reticle. If I'm going to be doing any ranging, I'll do it with a rangefinder and take out all the guess work and mental math.
