Out of the 16,000+ about 4 Britons and a handful of sepoys made it back to India via the Khyber Pass and other routes. The painting shows the last stand of the 44th Foot which was destroyed to a man with the rest of Elphinstone's army.
The only solution for Afghanistan is to put a wall around it. Allow weapons and ammo in. Nothing out.
But China will happily loot them for lithium... give the terrorists money for their Jihad. And as they protected Bin Laden, the Taliban will protect the Chinese mines. Count on it.
Meh... as long as the soldiers know they won all the engagements... while the politicians, lawyers, media and anti-American Commie civilians lost the war... they will hopefully come to terms with the great job they did while being totally hamstrung by a political and military leadership that didn't deserve them or their sacrifice.
I'm just too angry for words right now. So I'll leave it at that.

PS As for Maj. Gen. Donohue... If he has any honor he will speak out. Or put a pistol in his mouth. But my guess is that he is headed for a third star and will be given the job of heading Gender Transitions in the Airborne and will be made Chairman of the JCS for his expertise in Don't Ask Don't Tell. He isn't a Major General these days without litmus tests since he was a captain in 2008... or would I be wrong?
