Someone came by knocking on my door at 10:40 at night, bout 20 mins before I got home - daughter is now trained on the firearms of choice, S&W 642 airweight with 129gr Federal Hydrashocks...

Trained NOT to shoot, not to display weapon unless absolutely necessary.

someone rang the door bell and either tried to force the door open or shouldered it.

She's been trained how to rack a round into the 870, how to point and shoot the 642, and there's always the lil Ruger LCP and Kimber 45.

She will not be scared again. I'm frigging livid. I've taught her enough Karate to incapacitate someone if it became necessary but she doesn't train as much as I do so firearms are the next best...

...And yes she knows to dial 911 after the emergency is over or during it if she is able. Safety first, and 911 is only if there is time...Trust LE but when seconds count...

Re: FINALLY! Daughter wants to learn to shoot!

LEO response time out here is about 2 hours or so.
Train them right and train them SAFE! If you live in the backwoods, like we do. You can not depend on anyone to come and help you. I started my oldest at 10 shooting rifles. She didnt care much for it. Till she had a child of her own! The wife would kill a man faster than I any day! Sorry you had this happen.I hope all are well.

Re: FINALLY! Daughter wants to learn to shoot!

All of my kids 13-19 are trained on the use of firearms. I took them to Front Sight and now we go to the range weekly. We use realistic targets and do not shoot from the line behind the table.

It's pretty awesome to see your kids shoot a controlled pair and complete an after action movement. It's even cooler to see these same kids shoot a perfect called head shot in the cranial-ocular cavity. (I don't want them performing a Mozambique Drill every time so we do random called failures to stops.)

Remember you are only 50% as you normally are, when under real life pressure.

What is important that any female in that position have a source, male or female, parent or friend, to turn to. Too many women have an "incident", or realization that the world isn't perfect, and purchase a gun without properly learning how to use one. I became a gun owner in 1989, and shamefully did not learn how to use one until 2004 (and I'm still learning). I applaud those of you that encourage proper gun handling and ownership in your children!

Re: FINALLY! Daughter wants to learn to shoot!

Glad she was/is safe!!

My oldest son started shooting USPSA matches at 8 and has always had better shooting and firearm safety skills than a great number of adults. While we kept firearms secured in the safe, with the exception of two household protection weapons, he was not aware of the locations until he was old enough that he could be left home alone and may have needed access to them.
