For the last 6 weeks The Child Bride and I have been running every weekend for one thing or another. With the short days, there's been no time for any shooting. We'd be running today, but the Bride came down with a mild case of the crud, so travel plans were delayed. Range time!
This range is fairly new to me, I've only been living in the area since Sept. It's not a bad little range, target stands at 100 and 200, shoot straight south. Further past the stands is a range of hills cluttered with rocks of all sizes. Earlier this fall I was able to spend several calm mornings ranging rocks and getting dope out to 650. Today I'd thought to make it easy, and set up for my 450 rock which is about 16" wide and 8" high. When I left the house, the wind didn't seem to be to bad. On the drive out it became apparent the wind was 20+ from the NW. Temp was 20F.
It took awhile to set up, wind started piling up snow on everything. Consulted my .308 notes, elevation was 2.5 mils, I clicked in 2.7. No windage notes, but based on an experienced guess I dialed in 1 full mil right.
Set up prone, glad nobody was watching as this old body encumbered with winter gear fell into, rather than assumed, a shooting position. After some squirming 1st shot away. Hit, 4 ins left. Dialed in .2 more right and went 19 more hits. I've probably put 50 rounds into this rock, so other than some adjustments for wind and cold, pretty much a chip shot. After 20 rounds I noticed there was the beginnings of a snowbank on the case, and my hands were getting cold. Pack it in. Had a chance to try the new Warhorse Traveller rear bag. 20 rounds isn't much of a test, but it worked well today.
Took one photo and headed home. Checked the weather, windchill was zero F. No wonder the hands were cold.
This was my NoDak range day.
