Finally!! (warning new to me rifle)

After years of trying to own one I now have a R700 sps tac. Many will say, so who cares. Well if you have four kids, bills, ect and don't make 200k a year this is a big deal to me. My neighbor had this laying in his closet and asked me if I wanted it. Of course i said yes but how much. This is the shocker, he said "Remember when I was in the hospital and you cut my grass, got my mail, ect… Well here you go. I know you'll use it I only put about a box through it so it is good to go". WTF who does this!!!!! I am still in holy sheep shaggin shit what just happened mode.

With that said, what is the down side of this rifle that I need to start saving for?

I've got a Millet 4X16X50 I'm gonna put on it for now. Figure if I skim a lil money off each paycheck I'll try to get a used NF from here.

Lol no it wasn't I guess a back story is in order. My neighbor is an older guy, 70ish. He got into a car wreck and was pretty messed up for a couple months. We always talked smack to each other, he was a marine I was army. Well I didn't see or hear from him for about a week and his grass was tall ect… so I was cutting the grass when his son pulled up and gave me the low down. He was a busy guy with a few kids so I told him not to worry about the house and stuff I'll look out for it. Well I guess karma is real. The old guy has recovered and been home for about 6 months. Nice guy and can take a joke. I owe him now I guess lol.

I do make quite a bit of $ now, but not when they were younger, was poor as shit, the only extras I afforded myself was a 1911, a Win Model 70 30-06 and a Win 1200 pump 12 gauge, bought all this with my terminal leave money. Take your time things will come together for you, just shoot what you can afford, save money for ammo and wait til you build up some cash and income before you get a NF.

Yea definitely hold off on the NF for now, that Millett will carry the SPS Tac a long ways! As suggested above, get some ammo for it and perhaps a new stock. Never was a fan of the hogue one if that's what is has on there. Not the worst, beats the plastic POS on the SPS-V, but can definitely be upgraded.

Nice score! What's it chambered in, 308? As a current SPS owner I'd have to say the factory stock is the weak point of the gun. It has a lot of play in it. Keep your eye out for a used B&C or HS stock, you might luck out and find a good deal in the classifieds. It's probably wise to "buy once, cry once" when it comes to the scope base/rings and go with something in the upper tier if your going to build the gun up over time. If the Millet scope you have doesn't cut it take a look at SWFA's Super Sniper line, great scopes that don't break the bank. If you have the cash and want something better the Vortex Viper line of scopes get great reviews.

Karma can be a wonderful thing.

If it doesn't have a base, I have been VERY pleased with the Weaver Extended Multi-slot rail (20MOA).
They are quite well made, made in the USA and very reasonable on the price (30 bucks at midwayusa right now).
If you have an Academy sports in you area, they sell Blackhawk brand multi slot rails.
Both Blackhawk and Weaver are owned by ATK, so I am figuring the source is the same.

You're millet should serve you pretty well for the time being, if you don't have picatinny capable rings, the Weaver tactical style work very well. They are a bit of a pain, but they are very solid and hold the scope very well and are also reasonably priced.

Lucky for you, we live in a time of outstanding optics for a reasonable price.
A nightforce is always nice, but Bushnell, Sightron, Burris and Vortex make some damn fine scopes in the 800-1300 range.
The Bushnell DMR 3.5-21 is just about impossible to beat for around 1300.

If you don't reload, look to get some American Eagle 168 OTM M1A match loads. They run about 5 bucks less per box than FGMM and it shoots very well.
Save your brass and learn to reload. The AE 168 has crimped primers, keep that in mind when reloading.

Ive been fortunate and have accumulated a range of "stuff" that other than my desire really has no existential value. Your story exposes my own character flaws. Thank you for putting things in perspective. World would be a better place with more people like you and your neighbor.

To mimic what others have said use the Millet. I have one on my SPS and it is a fine scope for the money. I did change my stock and added a PTG DBM.
I use the Weaver 20 moa base with their tactical rings and it is a good solid set-up.
My advice...shoot the piss out of it until you get to the point your abilities surpass that of the gun then build from there.

Nicely done on your part and his, you have a decent rifle and a passable scope, spend your $ on reloading equipment and components. Don't blow your wad on gear and not be able to afford to feed the rifle.

I would agree with some of the above posts for the stock being the weakest point on the R700 SPS Tac. I owned one in 223 for a while and I did like the rifle, but the Hogue stock is horrible. The rubber stock is very flexible and although it is advertised as a free floated stock it actually touched the barrel when a bipod was attached. I would suggest the stock being the first thing you upgrade on the rifle. Congrats on the sweet score!

Nice score. I have a 700 AAC-SD all I did was the stock w/ bedding and trigger. Mine shoots 1/2-3/4 moa w/ 178's If I dont get in it's way too much. Enjoy

I hear ya....I bought a .223 sps tac and have yet to shoot it. Bought a SWFA that was on backorder, but got the email it shipped!! In the mean time I cornered an AAC-SD .308 for longer stuff.....and the spending never stops. I have Two kids and a small/new gun shop. I work with $200k in inventory but cant ever take them home....But oh well. Great gun, great story....

I'd like to thank everybody for the advise and support. i never helped the old guy to get anything, he's my neighbor. As far as my 4 kids it didn't start out that way. First surprise was twin girls, 2 years later came another daughter then 6 years after her God had pitty on me and gave me a "whoops birth control isn't 100%" son who is three now. My wife and I both hunt and the twins (10) are getting in to it. Life is good today!!!! Thank your all for everything Never thought it would be this well received.

Forgot to say it is a .308 Will get into reloading one day. Gonna try to put some down range this weekend.
