Finding the lands

Re: Finding the lands

I like this method better.

Re: Finding the lands

Used both. They will both give you an excellent starting point. Don't get too hung up on the length's, you absolutely have to play with it for "your" rifle and "your" bullet. I would highly suggest reading the "sticky" by TresMon and following the advice there to get you going. You will be amazed at how much a little expermenting safely will tell you. Your rifle and components will guide you, and the proof will be on the paper, really. I like to take my bolt's apart and feel the lands and back off from there, but to each his own. The idea of starting jammmed to me just makes too much sense. Load some, shoot some, you'll find the spot guaranteed.

Re: Finding the lands

I take a sized case, and cut down through the top of it with a hacksaw or dremel to just below the neck, about halfway into the shoulder. Clean up any burrs or sharp edges. Squeeze in the neck just a bit, and place whatever bullet you want to use in it just so that is stays in the case. The bullet should be somewhat snug, but can still be removed by hand. Then put it into the chamber and close it very slowly. Pull out the case and measure the OAL. Afterwards pull the bullet out a bit by hand and do it a few times to make sure the bullet isn't sticking in the lands.

Yes I have used this method for 30 years. It is simple and that is why some people think that it is not accurate...they are wrong. The tools are really nice and quite a luxury, but isn't it nice to know a method that does not require spending a single dime in fancy equipment. Didn't say I never used any tools to do this mind you but I sold all those tools when I quit 1000y BR. I have shot groups at 1000yds recently that rival anything I ever shot before.

Re: Finding the lands

My buddy made a C.O.L. rod with two machined collets.
On an empty chamber, set outer collet when the rod bottoms out against the bolt.

Then remove bolt & hold a bullet up into the lands. RE-insert rod and set the other collet.

Measure ID between collets and theres you COAL to firm contact with lands. I do this at least a half dozen times to ensure a decent average...

Re: Finding the lands

This method needs no special tools!

Just seat a dummy round (no primer or powder) with a soft crimp very long and put it in the rifle and close the bolt. Gently cycle the bolt and recover your dummy round. Measure and that is the OAL that is jammed to the lands.

After posting this over and over for the last two weeks I am convinced that no one is listening. Gadgets are a must have item for some people. After all, they make the simple properly complicated.

OH SHIT I hadn't thought of damaging the lands with the bullet being forced into them. Glad you caught me on this. WHATEVER YOU DO DON"T SLOWLY JAM A BULLET INTO THE LANDS!!!!!

Re: Finding the lands

armorpl8chikn: I'm listening. I've used the method the last few times. Checked with other methods and it is consistent. I soot the bullet on a candle before forcing in the chamber to see wether the bullet has been grabbed by lands and pulled back out.
