Anyone remember which developer/writer wrote about pushing oversized bullets (next caliber up) through rifles and how the rifle would just sewage them down? I don’t remember who that was but I remember reading it a few years back as I was beginning my journey down the cast bullet rabbit hole. I don’t remember if he was pushing 35 cal cast or jacketed through 30 cal barrels.

OK I THINK these are 2 different guns. And I've stared at the bottom pic for quite a while and still haven't figured out what I'm looking at. Can you enlighten this knuckledragger on what the blued part is that looks like it's been melted with a torch?

Paul Matthews advocated using larger than groove diameter bullets to achieve a better seal with lead bullets. But not 5 calibers larger. For example, if your groove diameter was .458” and your freebore was .462” then you should use .461” and a soft enough alloy to obturate. That way none of the gas would get around the bullet and lead up the bore.

A 35 cal bullet is way too big to chamber in a 30 cal firearm.

I know what you’re saying and I’m not recommending anyone load .358’s in their .308 barrels. I just can’t remember where I read about it and I thought maybe someone would remember who did it. His findings were that it would swage the bullet on down given a moderate load. It’s OK that you don’t know who wrote it, I don’t recall it anymore either. He was one of the old ones, always experimenting and made a name for himself.

I just looked and P.O. Ackley did some experiments with 8mm (.323) bullets in a 30-30 and no pressure signs produced. I swear I remember someone stating their findings were next caliber up failed to produce over pressure signs and just swaged the larger bullets down.

It seems it was PO Ackley. He opened the throat of a 30-06 to 35 then seated 35 cal bullets in 30-06 brass and fired them with no ill effects.
