Well I see a lot of other people post these so I will too.
Nothing special, just a run of the mill .308 Remington 5r with Seekins 20 moa rail and low 30mm rings and a B&L 10x40 Tactical scope.

Haven't had it to the range yet but should be heading up to the Yadkinville area next weekend for some shooting with friends.

I've got some boxes of 168 gr. and 175 gr. FGMM to try through it and the ballistics FTE app for my iPhone to hopefully get me close once I get zeroed.
If all goes well then towards the end of the month I should get a chance to try some steel at 400 to 500 yards and go to a 1000 yard br match and see if I can even het a hit on paper at 1000. Should be a fun weekend.

By the way the Seekins products are really nice pieces and the Feeler Gauge trick from LL has helped me on the last few scopes I've mounted. Gotta love the Hide.

Re: First attempt at precision rifle.

Yeah, a lot of similar looking rifles on here. Says a lot for them though if so many people are buying them as a starter gun.

By the way, I'm looking for people to shoot with in the Charlotte NC and surrounding areas. I have a few friends that shoot IDPA and IPSC around here but don't know anyone else interested in long range shooting.

Re: First attempt at precision rifle.

I believe you. This is one of the nicest "factory" 700's I've had my hands on. The weekend I'm going to be back in WV there is a 1000yd BR match that I'll try to attend just to get a chance to put a few rounds down range at that distance.
The guy running the match made it sound like I'd be wasting my time to come there with this .308 but I just want to see if I can get on paper.

It will be interesting to see what a target looks like through this 10x at 1000. It's impressive that military snipers used fixed scopes like these for a lot of years taking targets at 1000 or better.
I would like to try one of the SS 5-20's on her eventually but I think the B&L is good enough to get started with hopefully.

Re: First attempt at precision rifle.

Wv shooter, nice set up. It's old school by today's standards (in the glass dept) but really nice nonetheless. The guy running the match is full of crap. You can do really well with 10x. Don't need high magnification to do well. Good luck

Re: First attempt at precision rifle.

I got my 5R 308 and love it. The rifle is getting painted and a few small tweaks to it but aside from that i love the gun. I put a timney straight trigger (not the tactical version).

From what i have read the 5R is one of remingtons most accurate factory gun and depending on the shooters ability..can hang with the best of them.

Re: First attempt at precision rifle.

I ordered a timney 510 that will be here Monday. Been dry firing it and don't care much for the x-mark trigger that came stock. Other than that I would like to cerakote it black and install a badger knob and maybe a DBM and cheek riser or stock pack.

Re: First attempt at precision rifle.

I'm planning on documenting the weekend since it will all be new to me. I have mostly stocked up on FGMM 168 and 175 gr. Can anyone tell me, would it be worth it to buy a few other brands such as Southwest, Prvi match, and Black Hills to do some evaluation with or should I just stick with what I've got since I'm just getting started with this rifle?

Re: First attempt at precision rifle.

I would order some Southwest and not worry about the rest. My Custom shoots FGMM into 10 shoot 1 hole groups with GMM and is all over the place with either PPU Match offering, which cannot really be match.

Blackhills is good, but seems to be at a serious premium to GMM where I buy my ammo.

Re: First attempt at precision rifle.

Tonight I installed a timney 510 in my 5r which I consider a nice upgrade from the stock X-mark pro. So far I've only been able to practice with dry firing before my first trip to the range this coming weekend. The stock trigger was a bit heavier and had some noticeable creep before the break.

The Timney is a bit lighter at the factory setting with no noticeable creep and a nice clean break. I'd like to get it about a pound or so lower but I've got no experience adjusting triggers and wasn't sure which of the two screws on the front of the trigger to adjust. I'll probably take it to a smith with a pull gauge and have him set it at about 2-2.5 lbs.

I thought I'd post a few pictures incase anyone else that hasn't taken their 5r apart yet cares to look at them. Thanks to the Hide for all the great information. The google search box has served me well.

Some basic tools and a good Home Brew.

Function test came out right on. Bolt release works.
Bolt catch and spring flew out but wasn't hard to get back in.
This is my first time doing anything other than mounting a scope on a rifle.
I hope this isn't too many pictures. If it breaks some kind of Hide etiquette I'll take them down.

95 north, til you hit Quantico.

Re: First attempt at precision rifle.

I will be up that way by mid August. My sister and BIL are going to be stationed up there for a while so I should be able to get up that way and bring the rifle for some fun.

I'm in the Charlotte/Concord NC area and I'm not aware of many ranges around here over 200 to 300 yards.

Re: First attempt at precision rifle.

just made the same upgrade to my 700p. the screw with the nut on in the front does the adjusting. i have mine where i think i want it, but would like to find a trigger pull gauge to see where it's set just for reference. feels ten times better than the stock x-mark trigger.

Re: First attempt at precision rifle.

Got one of these in a 20incher with threaded barrel. Now all that's stock is the action and barrel. Put it in a Manner T4A Stock with Badgers Mini Chasis and a AAC Muzzel brake. The gun shoots like a Laser! It is the Best Rifle I've Ever Had. You're Not Under Gunned with this Hammer!!!

Re: First attempt at precision rifle. Remington 5r

Installed my Timney and adjusted it to about 2.25 lbs. SOOOO much better than the factory trigger.

Heading out to the range for some shooting with friends today. Should have some pictures to post this evening.

You made a GREAT choice. I love mine. I've finalized my reloads, and she's a shooter. If you don't like it, send me an email. My buddy shoots mine, and it's about time he got his own. He'll buy it.
