Went on a book buying spree earlier this summer.
Chanced upon a book written more like it was a memoir to be left to the family.....
Great book because it told the story of the formation of the First Marine Division. These were "The Old Breed".
Probably didn't sell as many copies as Hillary's book but people actually read this one.
Of particular interest to me this book had the most info on Gunny Elmo Haney I had read anywhere. Haney is the 1 in 100.
Anyway while doing some Googling of Haney I found these books.....
Arthur C. Farmington served from 1940 to 1971. He was with First Mar Div perhaps just a little bit earlier than Thurman Miller.
In "The Leatherneck Boys" he tells of the forming of the Div with the FMF Marines in Cuba as the hard center.
Goes to Guadalcanal as an AA gunner on a 20 mm Oilerkon.
His book includes his diary written during the battle. Friggen amazing detail of one Marines war. Practically every entry starts with the days password. Shocked me how much autonomy a PFC in a small gun unit gets in the midst of battle. Guy practically goes on libro between bombings and shelling to walk all over the US nominally controlled area. Sure most of the time it's in the search for food but I am surprised at his non chalance on running into a Jap Patrol even as he is aware of what happened to Col Goettge.
Example of his diary....
Lucky he was never captured his diary would have been a gold mine. Note all the "L" s in the passwords - that's racist.
After Guadalcanal he goes to New Georgia and Pelelieu not much about them but I sense it was awful especially as he went to Engineers and became a demo/flamethrower operator.
Haven't started his secon book yet but I think it starts with him being in the Reserves, finishing a bunch of college, and getting called up for Inchon serving on into Vietnam.
Anyway the second book was bought used......
Pretty cool title page....
Wonder if the CG dude was a coxswain on a landing craft.
