Hello all. Due to the recommendations of some friends and people on this forum I have decided to build a long range target rifle in .308. My budget is $2500 or less. I am mainly looking for recommendations on what action to go with. I currently have a Tikka T3 lite in .300WM and love the action, but I know that the Remmy 700 has many more available parts. I would also like to hear your opinion on glass, I have budgeted $1k for glass, and have been looking into the Nightforce NSX.
Thanks!

Re: First LR rifle. Looking for recommendations

I'm a new guy also and over the past year I have went through all the same things that you are about to go through and asked alot of the same questions. I'm gonna tell you that the question that you asked gets asked many many times a week on this forum and many people won't bother replying to your post, they are simply going to tell you to use the "search" function and do some reading.
I will tell you that over all the Rem 700 action is a good base to build on. I went with the 700 SPS-V in .300wsm and I really like it so far. In my opinion if your wanting to continuously shoot out past 600 yards with ease you may want to think about a lil bigger caliber....again this is just my opinion! Your budget sounds ok and with some research you should be able to decide on a good optic for the $1000, but it's not going to be a NSX with any amount of magnification for that that price. You might take a look at the Vortex. My best advice to you is to spend lots of time on here reading and you will learn alot I assure you. Also you might keep an eye on the classified section for a sale on a good rifle at a cheaper price than new.

If you have 3500 to spend total, I would say spend at least 1500 of that on an optic.

The Tikkas are great rifles. If you are comfortable with your 300wm, that would be a good rifle in a 308 also.

A 308 will work well out to 1000. You will learn an invaluable amount of information by shooting that.

Re: First LR rifle. Looking for recommendations

I would go with a Rem700 for a starter rifle. It is simple, high quality, and relatively inexpensive. You get a lot of rifle for your dollar. Just make sure you don't skimp out on rings and a base. You can always move them to a future rifle.

The NF NXS is my personal preference, but they are a bit over your 1k budget, so you may want to reevaluate your choice. Trijicon makes a great scope (accupoint) for under 1k, so take a look at them. NF scopes are so simple to use and are outstanding in quality and performance; you get the most glass for the money. Also, IMO NF has the best looking reticles out there, at least for my eyes. I would recommend the 2.5-10x32 for your new build if you are willing to go over budget.
