Wasn't exactly sure where to post this, so thought this would be appropriate. If not mods please move and thank you. Regardless, super excited that we are finally seeing our local range put on their first precision rifle match for our locals. While not new to long range shooting, this will be my first proper match in the format. We have a beautiful range out on the central coast, San Luis Obispo Sportsmans Association off of Hwy 1 in San Luis Obispo County, and a lot of people have been working super hard to put together a proper long range course for some time. I have been mildly active in USPSA and IDPA here, but this is really the first time I have had an opportunity to get into some precision rifle shooting in a match setting beyond my normal routine of a few hours behind glass, only having ranges out to about 1k. I was hoping that some of you that have had more time in this setting could shed some light on what I could expect from a smaller group that I'm sure will not be quite as well developed as the more well known matches. Personally I just can't wait to get out and actually participate in one of these after all the people I have met over the years that have had this opportunity. They should have targets out to approx 1400 yards, possibly farther.
I understand that without being involved with match direction it is hard to know how it will operate, but I know many started out in these formats. Mainly my curiosity is:
What can I do beyond physical conditioning and proper maintenance of my rig to be prepared when we are dealing with a new range/RSO's?
Are there any things I should plan for during a single day match to be more successful?
Gear wise I am running very minimal so I can focus on my shooting and positioning, mainly just a rear bag, dope on rifle, and bipod.
I'd love any advice you guys would be willing to share. Most of the friends I have joining me for the shoot are doing their first precision match as well, since previously we really haven't had any in our area in the past. Hoping this builds some love so we can see it grow here.
Thakns!
Tony
