First time as a spotter, need some tips and hints.

Hi guys, I'm going with a buddy this weekend to a 600yd max P-dog match (his first) and will be acting as his spotter as my two main guns are in various stages of reassembly (bedding). So I have a few questions and would really appreciate any tips or hints.

He'll be shooting a scope with MOA knobs with mildots, one of my NF scopes has this setup. Should I use that to spot him or would I be better off with non-reticle spotting scope?

Any supplies I should take other than my LRF and the usual garb?

in looking for trace look above the target.

if you have a spotting scope focus at a mid distance to find trace.

Roger that. When you say 'focus at a mid distance' do you mean for example focus at 300ish yrds for a 600yrd shot? Or just keep an eye around the 300ish range as a place to start picking up the trace?

I will not but have shot it several times.

Please be aware this is an individual match. No-one on the line shooting will have shooter-spotter communications.

If you want to observe your friend's shooting from over his bore with a scope, you will be in the way of the RO calling the start and time for each shooter. You'll need to be to the side of the bank of shooters he is on or back off the concrete pad on the gravel.

The long shot is 440 yards; the rest are 200 to 400. Trace is near impossible to see at short distance with the dirt berm backdrop on this range.

They do have an AR class, so if you have some sort of a decently accurate AR with scope and bipod, you could shoot the match no problem.

If my 223 bolt gun were up right now I'd lend you a rifle and ammo.

Thank you. He must have been mistaken when he said they would allow spotters. It's his first match so the whole thing is really just a learning experience. Thank you for the offer of the rifle at 440 I might (like you said) take my AR .233.

Forgot to say - yes the targets are unknown distance, so you'll need to range them or borrow the data from another shooter. You shoot 10 targets 4 different times, can have a notepad out, etc. so there really is not an UKD element to this match once you initially establish the distances without any time pressure.

Be sure and bring a mat of some sort for the concrete.
